I've often talked to you about gadgets similar to USB sticks that allow you to wirelessly access Android Auto or CarPlay, while if we want full multimedia like YouTube, Prime Video, or IPTV in the car we have to resort to so-called AI boxes. In one case we have a minimal expense, in the other we have to shell out significantly more money, but with today's review we will have a union between the two issues: minimal price, maximum multimedia. Specifically, I'm talking about the MSXTTLY U2AC-L9 wireless adapter, which transforms any wired Android Auto configuration into a seamless wireless experience. I emphasize the wired Android Auto aspect, so this product is certainly not suitable for iPhone owners or those who only have CarPlay in their cars. I also emphasize that you must have wired Android Auto in the car, not wireless, although in my case I was able to use it without any particular problems with a car equipped with wireless Android Auto as well as an aftermarket radio.

Unboxing
Inside the box, you'll find the wireless adapter itself, a USB-A/USB-A extension cable (since the dongle supports this connection, which is useful for tight spaces). You'll also find a USB-A to USB-C converter cable so you can use the product with vehicles that offer more modern connectivity. If you're using one cable or the other, the package also includes a 3M adhesive pad to secure the unit and a comprehensive user guide with images, also available in Italian.

As did?
The MSXTTLY U2AC-L9 looks just like a USB flash drive, impressively small, with a sleek carbon-look finish interrupted only by the Android Auto logo and a status LED on the front. The USB-A connector is gold-plated, ensuring greater connection stability and data transmission speed, which has a positive impact on streaming and calls. It also features passive cooling vents, a feature that will come in handy when outside temperatures start to rise, considering this product is continuously operating inside your car.

Hardware and startup
As already specified, for the MSXTTLY U2AC-L9 to function correctly, an Android smartphone with operating system version 11 or higher and wired Android Auto is required. Therefore, if your car offers wireless Android Auto, operation is not guaranteed. In my case, however, I performed tests with a DR 5.0 and an aftermarket EONON car stereo, both with wireless Android Auto. The initial start-up wasn't the best as I only got a black background on the screen. However, by accessing the dongle's settings, accessible via the IP address contained in the user manual, I reset the device even though it was new and, as if by magic, everything started working again.

Not exactly a plug & play solution but this is due to the fact that I did the tests with a “non-compatible” car. If you have a car with wired Android Auto, you just need to connect the dongle to the car's USB data port and in less than 8 seconds you will be operational, obviously after having paired the smartphone with the “smartbox” in the Bluetooth devices list.

Performance and responsiveness
I won't dwell too much on Android Auto, as the functions are those provided by Google's infotainment system. I can tell you that navigation on Google Maps and/or Waze was smooth, as well as the "Hey Google" voice commands working without delay, etc., but the unique feature of the MSXTTLY U2AC-L9 is that the system overcomes the limitations of Android Auto, even if you have a smartphone with Android 16 (in my case, Xiaomi 14T).

While Android Auto notoriously lacks audio streaming support, MSXTTLY's gadget allows you to bypass these restrictions, allowing you to view content such as YouTube, IPTV, or Prime Video. The magic happens with apps like Fermata Auto, CarStream, and other unofficial apps that bypass Android Auto's blocking systems. You can find these apps in a sort of store, AAAD, whose QR code for download is in the user manual. If you want a shortcut, I'll leave you the links to Fermata Auto and CarStream, which I use.

Video streaming also happens while you're driving, but of course you don't have to; take advantage of these multimedia opportunities, perhaps while parked waiting for someone. The video quality is good, with virtually no delay and excellent audio sync, at least on YouTube. For larger infotainment displays, the video may not be full-screen, but it still offers a watchable and entertaining experience. All in all, it's yet another reason to be proud of being an Android user, and this solution is ideal for those who want to cut the cord and enjoy a seamless, wireless experience on Android Auto, with the added benefit of video streaming (while stationary, mind you).
