Xiaomi Mi 5 receives Android Oreo on MIUI China Developer!

Xiaomi herself had been to inform us about her official forum of how to start from the 29 April all the weekly updates for their smartphones would have been suspended until July. It seems, however, that the Chinese company has changed its words as yesterday's legendary Xiaomi Mi 5 has been the subject of a full-bodied and welcome update.

Xiaomi Mi 5 finally receives Android Oreo on ROM China!

After weeks of internal beta testing, in fact, the MIUI 9 for the Mi 5 based on Android Oreo has finally been released to the public. The major update arrives with the MIUI China Developer 8.5.3 and weighs 1,5 GB if performed via Recovery ROM and almost 2 GB if performed via Fastboot ROM.

The update's changelog is really thin, the Xiaomi developers are limited to indicate only as "Optimization system Stability" the news that the update brings with it. We actually know that this is an update to Android 8.0 Oreo, most of the works focused on a better management of the processes in the background, with consequent improvement of autonomy, and on an improvement of all the functionalities related to the security of the system.

The update has arrived or will come via OTA to all those who are users of MIUI China Developer, but on the same forum en.miui.com indicate how it is preferable to proceed to an update via Recovery or Fastboot ROM in the following cases:

  • some bug fixes may not work unless you flush a Recovery ROM instead of proceeding with OTA.
  • migration from the China Stable ROM or ROM Global requires a Fastboot flash.
  • patched boot.img file or any changes to the system will not allow receiving the OTA [you will receive the Recovery ROM instead].

As always, before upgrading, it is advisable to buckup important data.

Given that it is the China Developer ROM, it is highly probable that the updates will be published in Oreo also for those custom ROM based on the above, those certainly more used by us Italian users.

It is not certain whether in the coming weeks the MIUI team will continue to release updates for the Xiaomi Mi 5: today's update I see it more as an exceptional case and I think that for this smartphone we will have to wait for the resumption of work scheduled for July .

Ed Oreo on MIUI Global?

As it regards instead Oreo on MIUI GlobalI can say from personal experience that the Fastboot 8.4.19 ROM is based on this version of Android.
