In March this year with the presentation of the Mi Mix 2S, Xiaomi also announced the presence of the AI functionality for its smartphones that would have allowed clear improvements for what concerns the photographic sector; but what's more important this statement has announced that Xiaomi will not be left behind, referring clearly to all those AI assistants present in the global market as Cortana for Microsoft, Alexia for Amazon or Siri for Apple. The only problem is that until now the AI assistant for Xiaomi called 小 爱 (xiao ai literally "little love"), that Sung Donovan called 小 爱 同学 "mate xiaoai" in the tweet depicting the 3 Mi Mix below, it could be used only in Chinese territory.
Xiao Ai: an English version for the AI assistant is scheduled
The 1 November Donovan Sung, Director of Marketing and Product Manager at Xiaomi, left a tweet in which asked for advice for an English name for Assistant Ai, Xiao Ai.
There were also sarcastic comments:
As noted, the second character 爱 means yes "love", but the pronunciation is identical to that of AI, acronym for "artificial intelligence". This makes us understand that it is scheduled an implementation for the assistant, which can also be used through the English language. This decision could have started from the complaints, starting from Twitter, of global users who were unable to use the function since the only supported language was Chinese.
For us Italian users probably will not make a difference because at least for now Italian is not supported, but we can see this post as a small step forward that the developers of Xiaomi are doing towards the global market, which brought more income to Xiaomi compared to the Chinese one.
The update will certainly come with a fairly heavy package via OTA for all devices.
Functions of Xiao Ai
But what are the functions of this AI assistant? The service, as for the other competitors, is based on access by voice command once the dedicated button has been pressed. Initially the apps best connected to this type of service were the Chinese ones like WeChat but probably the usability spectrum will be expanded by the developers. The main features will be:
- consultation of the weather forecast;
- reproduction of multimedia services such as music and video;
- take pictures without touching the phone;
- sending messages through the use of one voice;
- but above all full synchronization with the devices that are part of the Xiaomi home ecosystem: imagine yourself being like Tony Stark who speaks with Jarvis!

Hi Daniel! Unfortunately, this device is meant for China users only. Therefore it's only in Mandarin and there is currently no way to change it to English, at least a way that we know.
