Blackview WAVE 8C a low-cost smartphone to evaluate!

In the last few days, a low-cost smartphone arrived in our editorial office and we were asked for an opinion on it. The phone is a BlackView Wave 8C, we tried it and we're talking about it in this article.

Blackview Wave 8C PACKAGE

Inside the package we find everything we need to open it and use it without worries. In fact, we find:

  • Wave 8C Smartphone
  • 10W Type A Charger
  • Type A – Type C charging cable
  • Rubber cover
  • Pre-installed film

The materials are obviously polycarbonate but I must say well made, and the effect of the back is pleasant.

HARDWARE

Let's start immediately with a summary sheet and then we will explain it in detail:

CPU-RAM-ROM

Let's start from the processor that a Unisoc SC9863A, Octa-core, 4x 1.6GHz ARM Cortex-A55 (Quad-core), 4x 1.2GHz ARM Cortex-A55 (Quad-core) with 28nm manufacturing process. For those less familiar with numbers we can say that this is obviously an entry level CPU, dated late 2018, so don't expect miracles. The RAM and from 2Gb expandable via software up to 6Gb while the integrated memory, in our case, is 64Gb expandable up to 2Tb with the help of a microsd. I can tell you right away that, if you are interested in purchasing it, it is better to avoid this memory cut so as not to find yourself already short of storage space after a few weeks. So go to the version 128Gb this way you will be at peace, at least for a few months.

DISPLAY Blackview Wave 8C

The display is a unit IPS da 6.56" with resolution HD 720x1612p and brightness of 450Nits. Even here we cannot expect great things, the low brightness will prevent us from having a good view outside on particularly bright days, while I must say that the visibility inside is more than acceptable where all in all it does its job. There is the possibility of automatically adjusting the brightness based on the characteristics of the external one and the presence of the setting "night brightness” that we can set in the evening hours to avoid straining our eyes before going to sleep. There is also a dark mode which however will not give advantages in terms of battery life as this is not an Amoled panel. Let's say that in relation to the price of the phone, we cannot complain too much about the display.

Blackview Wave 8C BATTERY

The battery is a drive from 4700mAh that will get you through the day without much worry. Charging is not fast, we have a charger supplied 10w (5V x 2A) which will take about an hour and a half to fully charge our smartphone. We also have the possibility of using 2 energy saving modes in case of difficulty, “battery saving” and “ultra saving mode”.

CAMERA Blackview Wave 8C

The main rear sensor is a Samsung Isocell 13Mpx while the selfie is a sensor from 8Mpx

The camera follows a bit the trend of all the other HW components of the phone which remains an entry level. Tested a few shots and like all low-level sensors it shoots badly in difficult light conditions and discretely when there is a lot of light available. I also noticed a certain difficulty in managing the focus when there is a lot of light in fact in these cases I recommend you "tap" on the subject to photograph so that it is illuminated exactly what we are trying to immortalize. A clear example is the shot of the statue, first without tapping then tapping it. Yet even in the first case the software had recognized it as a subject but not illuminated correctly.

There are some interesting modes such as HDR, Night, Panorama, Portrait. While video recording stops at FHD resolution at 30fps.

Here I put some shots to give you an idea of what we are talking about

SOFTWARE

The operating system is Android 14 quite stock, with few variations on the theme. However, I found a function that is dear to me, which I have almost never found (or perhaps never) on phones of this level, namely the ability to program switching off and on of the same phone. The notification section is good and has everything we need and perhaps even more than many other smartphones of a higher level. The display customization that I already talked about above is also good, good wallpapers and styles, decent smart controls via movements and there is also the double tap to reactivate the phone (this feature is also absolutely not a given).

As for the general reactivity, it depends a lot on where you come from... I, unfortunately for the wave, only use top range so the step back is huge. Of course, if you come from another entry level, as in the case of my father who came from a little M3, then you will find yourself well

PROJECTED IMPACT

As always, the final conclusions are also based on the purchase price. The Wave 8C list price is €149 in the 64GB version. To me, honestly, it seems crazy, but luckily you can find it on Amazon with a really significant discount of 73€ and we can therefore take it home for only 76€! At this price it goes without saying that it is a product to buy if you need a forklift or a gift for your children who have to face the world of smartphones
