Xiaomi Mi Band 6 vs Mi Band 5: two generations compared

A few days ago it has Xiaomi Mi Band 6 debuted in China, or the latest smartband of the Chinese giant. Between criticism and praise, we cannot say that we are totally satisfied. For years, users have been asking for the implementation of some features that unfortunately, not even this year, we have seen. We refer specifically to the GPS and to the chip NFC for contactless payments. Although the smartband has only debuted in China at the moment, we are sure that its functionality will not change in the global variant. But now let's see the discussion panel with the smartband of the previous generation.

Xiaomi Mi Band 5

  • matter: TPU plastic and PC

Let's start with the design: in terms of measurements and weight it changes well poco but the big difference is in the screen. It goes from a 1.1 "rectangular display to 1.56" oval display. It increases the resolution along with the size and this leads to more data visible on the screen. The touch button that is now integrated, with the Mi Band 6, on the whole screen disappears clearly. Another small difference is in the glass: we go from a 2.5D construction to a 3D one. What changes? Virtually nothing ...

In terms of memory, on the Mi Band 6 it was increased both RAM and storage. We do not know the reason in reality as the data that a smartband has to store are very few and even the memory of the Mi Band 5 would have been fine. In any case, as the memory increases, unfortunately, there is also no increase in battery. It remains at 125mAh and with a autonomy of 14 days. It could be a step forward in terms of autonomy if we consider that the screen is bigger than before.

As for the sensors, the only big difference between the two smartbands lies in the presence of SpO2 in the latest Mi Band 6. This sensor allows to measure the oxygen saturation level of the blood. Of all the news that users were asking, perhaps this is the last: in fact, GPS and NFC are missing for contactless payments. These two have been longing for a lot for years: we have been asking for them since the fourth edition but still nothing.

The last difference is in the number of sports activities. You pass by 11 of the old edition to 30 of the new one. Added sports are: indoor fitness, ice skating, HIIT, zumba, cricket, bowling, basketball, core training, stretching, stepper, dance, volleyball, gymnastics, pilates, street dance, table tennis, badminton, boxing and kickboxing.

Conclusions

Is the transition from Mi Band 5 to Mi Band 6 worthwhile? For the moment we lean towards the no, unless the brand will surprise us with the arrival of a version equipped with NFC. The device will debut in Italy a end of April at a price of 49.99 €. Maybe a bit 'altino, it's true: that's why we hope until the last in a version with NFC.
