Goodbye Cortana on Windows 10 and Windows 11

Cortana, Microsoft's virtual assistant, is set to undergo major changes to Windows 11 and Windows 10 later this year. This news, announced by Microsoft, comes just a week away after the presentation of Windows Copilot, a more advanced AI assistant based on ChatGPT technology, capable of handling more complex requests.

Microsoft says goodbye to Cortana on Windows 10 and Windows 11. Official support for the assistant ends. Welcome Copilot who replaces you

In its supporting documentation, Microsoft ha clarified the implications of retiring the virtual assistant: “We're making some changes to Windows that will impact users of the Cortana app. As of late 2023, we will no longer support Cortana in Windows as a standalone app… This change only affects Cortana in Windows and your productivity assistant, Cortana will continue to be available in Outlook Mobile, Teams Mobile, Microsoft Teams Display, and Microsoft Teams Rooms.

The company goes on to say: Microsoft understands that this change may affect some of the way you work in Windows, so we want to help you transition smoothly to the new options. Instead of clicking the Cortana icon and launching the app to start using your voice, you can now use your voice and meet your productivity needs through different tools.”

Microsoft continues to promote many of its recent AI products and services including Bing Chat AI and Windows Copilot, which is expected to launch this fall around the same time the virtual assistant is being retired, as suitable replacements for the app of the same name. The new Windows Copilot should be able to do most of what the Cortana app can do, plus much more.

As Microsoft mentions, the assistant as such to productivity in Microsoft 365 Apps will not disappear and will continue to function normally. It's only in Windows that it will be retired this fall.
