Unboxing and Assembly

The sales package of ENGWE Y600 is quite large and heavy, as per the company's tradition. Inside we find the scooter almost completely pre-assembled, protected by some polystyrene blocks and some plastic bags to cover the most delicate parts. We then find a cardboard package containing the instructions and the charger with Italy. Assembly is simple, as it involves tightening the screws relating to the handlebar components, while what will take you a little more time is dismantling the saddle support.

Design and construction

The decidedly rugged and sporty aesthetic of this ENGWE Y600 immediately conveys a feeling of solidity and reliability. Particularly noteworthy is the large platform with a metal structure and covered with non-slip silicone, whose only flaw is that it gets dirty easily. The platform has a sufficiently large width (23 cm), making it comfortable for navigation even on long routes. The footrest is also convenient, which as already mentioned you will have to mount by removing the saddle (illegal in ITALY), but considering that the handlebar is slightly inclined and not straight, the footrest does not allow you to take advantage of all the available footrest, so if you are a little more paunchy, you can opt to also remove the footrest, without worrying about the rear wheel mudguard, made of rigid and ultra-resistant plastic.

On the sides of the floor we find a series of LEDs which, in addition to signaling the position and possible braking, in this case with a pulsating light, also offer direction lights or, better yet, direction indicators. The thing that I liked so much, in addition to visibility even in full light conditions, is that if we forget to turn off the turn signal, the scooter will remind us thanks to a buzzer.

ENGWE Y600 is equipped with 10 x 4 inch wheels with very deep grooves, to ensure maximum grip even on difficult surfaces, which is accompanied by an excellent hydraulic damping system both rear and front, but unfortunately the system is not adjustable. The front shock absorbers are however well calibrated for a weight exceeding 80 kg, ideal for going up and down pavements without hearing strange noises. On the rear wheel we then find the 600W motor with a peak of 830W of power to tackle steep climbs or tackle off-road terrain, without the fear of struggling.

The maximum capacity reaches 120 kg and slopes of up to 15% can be climbed. The mechanical disc brakes that support the E-ABS technology are excellent, but there is no engine brake, which can theoretically be activated via the secret menu of the controller (I wasn't able to do it), but in any case the stop is immediate. The Y600 scooter comes from the factory with a maximum speed blocked at 25 km/h with 3 driving modes: level 1 with a speed of 6 km/h, level 2 which reaches 15 km/h and level 3 which reaches a peak of 25 km/h. In reality you can unlock the maximum speed, which reaches 45 km/h (you can find the appropriate guide on the blog). The ENGWE Y600 offers an IPX5 waterproof rating, meaning you can travel in the rain but not submerge it in puddles or leave it unattended under water.

All this load of technology translates into a heavy weight but not too much: we are talking about around 25 kg, in line with other heavyweights in the category, but the foldable design of the scooter facilitates any loads in the car or directly on public transport. In fact, starting from Adjustable height handlebar of screwable semi-bayonet type, allows you to compact the closed dimensions of the scooter. At the end of the handlebar travel, we find a red lever which unlocks the folding mechanism, but at the same time offers double safety (lever + screw lock).

Finally on the handlebar we find a command controller to operate the front light, which offers a very clear view of the road in dark conditions, thanks to 4 LEDs but unfortunately we cannot adjust their position. From the controller we can then activate the very audible electronic horn and finally the directional arrows. On the right side of the handlebar we find a secondary display which only shows the voltage of the battery to which the socket for the keys is connected, which only serve to activate the power supply of the scooter. Finally, in addition to the accelerator lever, we find the main display with its button for choosing the engine power level. Here we can view some information such as the current speed, the distance travelled, the active driving mode, the turning on of the headlights and indicators, the battery level etc.. The brightness is high, so readability is always good even under the direct sunlight. The overall picture of the ENGWE Y600 is completed by the presence of the rear light, which turns on more strongly when we brake.

Autonomy

The ENGWE scooter promises a range of up to 70 km, but only when driving in medium mode with a limit of 15 km/h. However, if you unlock the maximum speed of 45 km/h, the total autonomy drops to 50 km for a single charge.

From my road tests I can say that these values are definitely real. Obviously a lot depends on how much weight you carry and, above all, on the average gradient of the route: if there are many climbs, the autonomy is greatly penalized. However, we can count on an 875 W/h battery (18.2 Ah for 48.1V), specifically 13 cells in series inside the platform made entirely of metal, the full charge of which takes place in approximately 8/9 hours via the charger with XLR connector. I didn't like this type of connection very much, in fact, be careful, for example, to let a screwdriver touch the connectors, as the battery could go into short-circuit protection and to reactivate it you have to dismantle everything, so always cover the charging connection with the cap. silicone present on the footboard. In addition to short circuit protection, the battery also offers additional protection systems, such as overcurrent, overcharging, overheating, low voltage.

Experience of use

On the road test, ENGWE Y600 performs well on any type of track. It goes great on asphalt, it copes well on dirt and cobblestones, it manages to overcome short stretches of gravel or other uneven terrain without too much effort. As mentioned a few lines above, the maximum speed reaches 45 km/h but basically the vehicle arrives blocked at 25 km/h as per the legal limits. One of the most impressive things about this model is the sense of solidity it manages to convey: stepping onto the large platform and holding the steering wheel in your hands you always feel safe and comfortable while driving.

The suspensions, although not adjustable, offer excellent driving comfort, being gentle in cushioning jolts, potholes and instability of the ground. The handling is precise even with bumps, potholes and small imperfections in the asphalt which are effectively cushioned. Braking behaves super effectively, without ever feeling too abrupt. The integrated E-ABS system prevents locking and ensures safer braking. The acceleration, however, was too quick, sometimes causing the vehicle to wheelie: the thrust of the powerful engine is felt, every now and then the scooter tends to sprint but you just need to get familiar with the Y600 and dose the acceleration well.

Last notes regarding the "accessories": the integrated indicators are quite bright and have an audible sound even in traffic. The bell is conveniently placed and easy to press. The front light is strong enough to ride even at night.

Conclusions and price

ENGWE Y600 is already available on the market with a list price, net of discounts offered by the company, of €579 for Italy with free delivery from the European warehouse, within 7-10 working days and no customs taxes. A decidedly competitive figure compared to other more famous models and rivals.

With him we have excellent performance, a range that is the envy of many and high driving comfort, thanks to front and rear suspension, as well as enjoying a beautiful design. ENGWE's attention to detail then completes the extremely positive opinion. In short, if you want a top electric scooter, with all the options and with an out of the ordinary design, it's difficult not to take this Y600 into consideration.

Nerd, Geek, Netizen, terms that do not belong to me. Simply myself, technology lover and provocative as Xiaomi does with his products. High quality at fair prices, a real provocation for the other most famous brands.
