Facebook and Instagram will stop tracking ads in Europe, but there's one thing we can do

The debate aroused by Meta does not subside and continues to cause discussion. The company that owns Facebook and Instagram was fined approximately $423 million by the Irish Data Protection Commission, the privacy regulator in the European Union (EU), for the way it used data collected from users. A precedent that made Europe move. In fact, Facebook and Instagram will disable ad tracking in Europe. However, it's not that simple.

Facebook and Instagram will let us disable ad tracking, but only in the EU and there's a catch: a damn form

Initially, Meta had threatened to remove Facebook and Instagram from the European app stores, but this was not the case and the company had to make some changes. According to the Wall Street Journal, EU citizens will probably have the ability to disable ad tracking for your accounts. However, Meta will require that users fill out a form to opt out of tracking. The company also reserves the final say on whether or not to accept this request. Privacy activists are concerned because the user is forced to choose between options proposed by a company and, in addition, user data will continue to be enabled by default when the account is created.

Currently, there is an option to disable some form of tracking on these social platforms, but it is limited. The new opt-out form, if accepted, it will severely limit the data that social platforms can use. You will still be tracked by public and general information such as your age range and general location, but will not be tracked for specific activity on websites or apps. In general, this appears to be a compromise of solutions between the parties involved. but not a solution. However, Meta is trying to remain sovereign despite all the limitations imposed by regulators around the world. European citizens will start seeing opt-out notifications starting next week. So whoever is interested, must be careful.

In any case, the ability to disable ad tracking represents a step forward for privacy protection of European users. However, there are still many aspects to consider to ensure greater transparency and respect for privacy by tech companies, not only in Europe, but all over the world.
