End of the rebirth of tablets? In Q3 2022 sales down by 8,8%

There are many companies that have launched new tablets in recent months, such as Xiaomi, Huawei, Redmi, Lenovo and even Apple itself. With so many devices, it seems this market niche is experiencing a new golden epic, but the numbers seem to give a different return from that, describing a very different reality.

Judging by the latest market analysis, the tablet market collapsed in the third quarter of 2022, heralding a decline that has already involved this technology segment in the past. If the rebirth came thanks to a pandemic that has forced millions of people to smart working and distance learning, now that the anti Covid measures have relaxed, is the "godsend" over for tablets? (no political quote ... I swear).

As early as the third quarter of 2021, the decline in tablet sales was sensed

If we look at the report just published by the IDC (International Data Corporation), international tablet shipments fell by 8,8% during the third quarter of 2022. The various OEMs examined shipped 38,6 million units between July and September, down from 42,4 million in the third quarter of 2021.

Even when compared with the results for the second quarter of 2022 (April to June), the data is not encouraging. For the second quarter, the companies shipped 40,4 million tablets worldwide, which is up from the third quarter of this year.

Tablets are technological gadgets still sought after by users, but compared to a smartphone, their renewal does not arrive with the same frequency and despite the launch of new models, there are still many who prefer their absence at home, orienting themselves on the purchase. of Smart TV or laptop.

Also worth mentioning is the global economic downturn which has undoubtedly weakened purchasing power and willingness. Many therefore do not prioritize the purchase of tablets, considered more as an entertainment tool, rather than indispensable. And then, on the other hand, Chromebooks, laptops and cell phones are becoming more and more powerful, making their replacement unnecessary in a short time.

Apple's iPads remain the undisputed kings of the tablet market

As for the distribution of the tablet market share, it remains an undisputed leader: Apple. The Cupertino company is at the top of the table, with 37,5% of the market thanks to its iPads. However, a small recession in sales also affected the American giant, with shipments down 1,1% less in the third quarter of 2022 compared to the third quarter of 2021. In figures, the decrease was 200000 units.

In second place is Samsung, with a market share of 18,4% and 7,1 million tablets sold in the third quarter of 2022. Compared to the third quarter of 2022, it sold 300000 fewer units, equal to a contraction. by 4%. Amazon closes the podium with its Fire tablets and a market share of 11,1%. The giant online store sold 400000 fewer tablets than in the third quarter of 2021, causing growth to slow by 8,1%.

The biggest drop in sales was that of Lenovo, which sold 36,6% fewer units than last year. Meanwhile, Huawei was the only one in the top 5 to have positive growth. They sold 2,4 million units in Q2022 100000, 2021 more than Q2 XNUMX for a XNUMX% increase.

An almost inexplicable growth, considering the absence of support for Google services. Finally, IDC pointed out that brands such as Xiaomi, OPPO, Vivo and Realme may not hold the places of honor, but which are among the most popular in the medium-low range of the market.
