Where the official support of Xiaomi there is that of alternative ROM developers like LineageOS. This custom ROM in particular is among the most famous and appreciated in the entire panorama of modding and the reasons are clear. The support is lasting, the stability of the ROM is undoubtedly better than that guaranteed with the official ROMs and above all it gives life to smartphones that would otherwise be dead. For example Redmi 3S / 3X, Redmi 4 / 4X and Xiaomi Mi 5S they could count on the support of LineageOS 16 but from today we can say goodbye to support.
Three of Xiaomi's historic smartphones say goodbye to support for LineageOS 16 based on Android 9 Pie: there are now two paths to take
Probably not many users are using it yet Redmi 3S / 3X, Redmi 4 / 4X and Xiaomi Mi 5S but personally i still have a My 5 who travels like hell with custom ROMs. I still have to decide to change the battery, but if there was not the problem of autonomy I would gladly keep it as my main device. But there comes a time when even developers abandon overdue projects and this is the case for the devices mentioned above.
According to what was announced on GitHub indeed, the developers who until now have dedicated themselves to the development of this version of custom ROM on these devices will stop working on it. The reasons, as always, have not been officially communicated but it is very easy to understand why: it is a smartphone very old which currently only nostalgics still own.
However, even if someone has them in their drawer, they are very unlikely to use them as an everyday device. Processors begin to stick with the heavier applications and the processors cannot efficiently keep up with our needs. In any case it is about device with 4 or 5 years behind that inevitably have come to the end of the game. As we said earlier, there are two paths to take:
- look for an alternative custom ROM (if available)
- permanently abandon the device and use it as it is until the end of its days
