This year's MWC 2023 conference will be officially held starting February 27, which is next Monday. As the start of the conference approaches, major manufacturers have also announced their new technologies. One of them is well-known Taiwanese chip maker MediaTek, which just announced that it will unveil a new non-terrestrial network NTN 3GPP 5G solution at MWC2023, providing support for two-way satellite communication for smartphones and other devices.

It is understood that this time MediaTek has chosen Skylo, a non-terminal NTN service operator as a partner. With MediaTek's NTN 3GPP modem and Skylo's NTN service, smartphone and IoT manufacturers can develop new devices with integrated satellite connectivity, such as in smartphones, tablets, sensors and even wearables. At present, MediaTek can already integrate cellular and satellite connections in the same device, and Skylo's NTN service is also commercially available and has been extensively tested with MediaTek's NTN 3GPP chipset.
It is also reported that the Motorola Defy 2 and Defy series accessories will be the first devices to support MediaTek's satellite communication technology. The devices just mentioned will be released in North America in the second quarter of 2023. Considering that most of the Defy user groups are people with high demands who venture outdoors where normal networks cannot reach, it seems quite appropriate to launch this technology in the Defy series.
