Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 vs. OnePlus 5T: Compare bezel-less

The 2017 will be remembered as the year that smartphones saw the abandonment of the historic "cornices" lateral. While minimal-edge devices are not a novelty, since they have appeared since 2014, this year the trend has been exaggerated, accelerated especially following the presentation of the revolutionary Xiaomi Mi Mix last year. So, after other major brands such as Samsung, Honor, LG and even Apple have followed Lei Jun's footsteps and partners, it is now the turn of OnePlus, which takes its flagship model by introducing OnePlus 5T, ready to deal with its most direct competitor: it is Xiaomi Mi Mix 2.

OnePlus 5T is basically OnePlus 5 with a edge-to-edge display and improved cameras. About 430 €, OnePlus 5T sees itself as its main competitor Xiaomi Mi Mix 2, which is sold from 420 € (here some of the best offers available) and features an edge-to-edge display with an aspect ratio of 18: 9.

So let's look at the head-to-head analysis between these two great devices.

  1. Both smartphones have design premium. Aluminum with OnePlus 5T carries on the design choices introduced with OnePlus 5 - with the only change represented by the miniaturization of the front edges and the subsequent displacement of the fingerprint sensor on the rear panel. The Mi Mix 2, on the other hand, comes with the very original ceramic body, with curved edges on the four sides, and an 7000 series aluminum frame. While the luxurious MiXX2 ceramic body transmits feelings of solidity and generally give a true premium idea, the OnePlus 5T does not lack a certain level of elegance and sophistication.Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 vs. OnePlus 5T: Compare bezel-less
  2. At the level of quality constructive, is open war between the two contenders. While the Mi Mix 2 ceramic body makes the smartphone scratch resistant, it is also true that it increases the fragility of the metal. On the other hand, the OnePlus 5T has a fully aluminum frame, which means that the phone is literally sculpted in a single metal block.
  3. In commercial terms, we can no doubt say that Unic Selling Point, that is, the element that arises as the main reason for the purchase of the product, for both smartphones is the display edge-to-edge. While both smartphones have minimal frames, the Mi Mix 2 stands out to win the bezel-less challenge even at the top of the screen. This is thanks to the choice that Xiaomi has made in terms of positioning the front camera, reengineered on the lower frame, as well as introducing a "hidden" speaker and "guided" audio on the tiny upper frame. The Mi Mix 2 has a full HD + LCD display from 5,99 inches with a pixel density of 403ppi. The OnePlus 5T, on the other hand, has a Full HD + AMOLED panel from 6,01 inches that translates into slightly deeper and darker colors, as well as customary for organic LEDs.
  4. Both Mi Mix 2 and OnePlus 5T are extremely powerful smartphones. To move everything we find for both of them processor Snapdragon 835 - the ultimate Qualcomm high-end chipset that supplies virtually all of the 2017 Android range tops, combined with the Adreno 540 GPU. OnePlus 5T is available in two variants of the memory: one with 6 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage and one with well 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal memory. The Mi Mix 2, on the other hand, is available in a single configuration for RAM (6 GB), while for the ROM we cut from 64, 128 and well 256 GB. Certainly, the most balanced cut is the central configuration, however, considering that for any of the two devices there is no possibility of expansion.
  5. On the front of the software, the two smartphones are deeply different.
The Oxygen OS aboard the OnePlus 5T is clean and smooth. It brings with it features not found in the stock Android while being almost as light and smooth. The biggest news is undoubtedly the Face Unlock - which uses the OnePlus 5T's front camera to identify over 100 significant points on the user's face. Mi Mix 2 instead comes with the excellent MIUI 9, which brings with it many new features, such as multitasking that can be used with split screen and support for Google Assistant. However, compared to the pure Android operating system and the Oxygen OS itself, MIUI seems to be even slightly less reactive, but Xiaomi's continuous updates will surely be able to fill this gap within poco.
And just for updates, for OnePlus there is already confirmation that 5T will be upgraded to Android 8.0 Oreo by January 2018, while for Xiaomi we still have no details on the release date of the new distribution on Mix 2.
  6. On the front cameras, smartphones use different approaches. While the OnePlus 5T has a dual camera at the back, the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 has a unique 382MP IMX 12 sensor featuring well-defined 1,25 micron pixels and optical image stabilization. OnePlus 5T is equipped with a 16 MP primary sensor with an aperture of f / 1,7 and a pixel size of 1,12 micron. The secondary sensor is new - OnePlus abandoned the telephoto lens found on OnePlus 5 for a new 20 MP sensor with an aperture of f / 1.7 and a size of 1 micron. The secondary sensor is able to combine four pixels into one, allowing each new pixel to capture more light. There is still no official data on the performance of the 5T room, but OnePlus promises better results in poor lighting conditions thanks to this new configuration. The Mi Mix 2 rear camera is perhaps the least convincing element: it produces good shots in the presence of light but struggles in poor lighting conditions, although huge progress has been made with respect to the first Mix. At the front, OnePlus 5T has an 16MP sensor with f / 2.0 and Mi Mix Mix 2 comes with a 5MP camera with f / 2.0 aperture.

A 469 €, in terms of price Mi Mix 2 6 / 128 GB it is positioned between the two versions of OnePlus 5T (430 € for the 6 GB - the previous version of OnePlus 5 - and 496 € for the 8 GB). While the Mi Mix 2 can already be purchased on several online stores (e here you will find numerous offers for all tastes), OnePlus 5T will be on sale in Amazon India from November 28, with the exclusive for Prime users to be able to access the early purchase of 21 November.

I am in love with Xiaomi and MIUI, but I have to improve on the photographic sector !!! There are many competitors, aesthetics are fine, very aggressive prices and Qualcomm chip sets, but for me as well as in this case the real difference is the camera !!!! I have the MI 5, since November 2016, to date there are many devices that have followed it, and that I like but the quality of the photo energy does not differ so much from those of my current device. And so I didn't buy anything. These days I have read that the MI 7 will be the... Read the rest »

The photographic sector has improved a lot, trusted, especially with Mi6, Mi Note 3, Mi5x and MiA1. We are not at the top of Samsung's tops, but fortunately the price is still far behind.

Maybe in optimum light conditions !!!
But suffering is still so low in light conditions, at least according to the considerations of the various elite reviewers who are on the net.
And also in the article above… .. I think it was written…. quite right??

I did not say they did not suffer but only that they really improved compared to Mi 5, just in low light condition.
Trust that apart from the 5T of course, I have tried them all WELL and the same cannot be said of all the reviewers ... especially the "elite" ones 😀
What then elite or not, even the reviews remain in many ways still subjective

We are actually saying the same thing, but maybe differently.
We hope for a better future soon.

PS: about reviews I follow Galeazzi.

The name was not to be discredited, rather the opposite.
I follow him from the times of telefonino.net and I have a great consideration, obviously in terms of professionalism because I do not know him personally.

However, the note3 is very intrigued by me

PS: I understood what you meant.

Hi Lello, you did a great analysis. Over time, Xiaomi has improved every department of its devices in a constant and planned way. The photographic department has certainly evolved. As you correctly point out, they have now targeted the top players on the market. To do this, it will be necessary to fill the last remaining gaps ...
