OnePlus 9 or OnePlus 9 Pro which one would I buy after 3 months from the release?

In my video comparison OnePlus 9 Pro Vs OnePlus 8 Pro you asked me for a comparison even between the 2 top range of this year. Although dozens have already been done, I decided to do the umpteenth as to date (August 2021) after several firmware updates things may have changed.

We assume that the differences are not very many but certainly the price difference that today can be checked on Banggood (which we thank for sending the sample also of the 9) is not to be underestimated, so let's see what these differences are so as to make you a more precise idea of the 2 models:

AESTHETICS AND HARDWARE

Very similar in the back and on the edges, we find differences in the camera department where in the Pro version there will be an extra lens (the telephoto lens) and in the Display (talk that we will deepen later) EDGE in the Pro e FLAT in the normal version. Dimensions and weight are in favor of the OP 9 (160 x 74.2 x 8.7 mm 192Gr, in fact the Pro even if slightly narrower (0.6mm) is longer (3mm) and heavier (197Gr). They seem to be minor differences but I assure you that As for the colors, this year wins hands down the 9 that we find in Blue (wonderful) Purple and Black. Of course, they are tastes and some might prefer those of the Pro, but also all the people I read in various blogs think exactly like me.

From the HW point of view we have the same components: cpu SD 888, RAM memory 8 / 12Gb Lpddr 5, storage ROM 128 / 256Gb UFS 3.1, Adreno 660 gpu, Display 120Hz (LPTO on OP 9 PRO). It goes without saying that there will be no difference in the execution of any application.

BATTERY

The autonomy chapter is always of my interest, in fact I hate having to recharge during the day. The only flaw I find in OP smartphones has always been right here, I can never be fully satisfied. On both we find a battery from 4500mAh with super fast charging a 65w (from 0 to 100 in about 30 minutes) and a 45W wireless on the Pro and 15W on the 9. more. This is certainly due to the smaller Display (6.55 ″ Vs 6.7 ″) which also has a lower resolution (FullHD + Vs QHD +). It seems that the new technology does not bring this benefit LPT extension on the display of the 9 Pro (this discourse will also be explored further on).

DISPLAY

In this sector we find one of the most evident differences between the 2 phones, but beware .. evident on paper but not evident in everyday use. On OP 9 we find a 6.55 ″ 120Hz refresh rate Fluid Amoled FLAT panel with a resolution of 2400 x 1080 pixels 402 ppi. On the 9 Pro, on the other hand, a 6.7 ″ 120HZ refresh rate Fluid Amoled EDGE panel with a resolution of 3216 X 1440 pixels 525 ppi and LPTO technology. The latter allows the automatic switching between frequency from 1 to 120Hz depending on what is displayed. For example, if we are looking at a photo it will go to 1Hz if instead we are "shaking" in our favorite social network it will go to 120Hz. All this should lead to a decent energy saving as the more the refresh rate rises, the more battery will be consumed. I say should because I have absolutely not noticed on the 9 pro (compared to the 8 pro instead set at fixed 120Hz). On the 9 instead we can set the 2 classic frequencies 60 or 120Hz.

CAMERA

But let's get to the focal point, and not because we are talking about the camera .., of the question, the real difference that we find between the 2 models, or the camera department. These are the detailed features:

ONEPLUS 9:

ONEPLUS 9 PRO:
Main camera

Sensor Size: 1 / 1.43 ″
Megapixels: 48
Pixel size: 1.12µm
OIS: Yes
Lens components: 7P

Aperture: ƒ / 1.8

Ultra Wide Camera
Sensor: Sony IMX766
Sensor Size: 1 / 1.56 ″
Megapixels: 50

Lens: Freeform Lens

Telephoto Camera
Megapixels: 8
Pixel size: 1,0 µm

Aperture: ƒ / 2.4

Monochrome Camera
Megapixels: 2

As you can see, apart from the wide-angle and the BN camera which are identical on the 2 smartphones, on OP 9 Pro there is a more performing main sensor and a telephoto lens that we just can't find on OP 9. Remember that from this year, the OnePlus flagship software is enriched by an important collaboration, which has already begun to bear fruit. This collaboration is with the historic American brand Hasselblad. In the video review you will see a hundred shots that I took in the same light conditions and from there you can see that the only differences between the 2 phones will come out just when the lighting conditions begin to be poor. In this case the OP 9 Pro does much better, although I want to remind you that the sensor of the 9, the Sony Imx 689, is the same as the OP 8 pro which has been praised by all for its ability to take good photos even in conditions of precarious light. Let's sum up by saying that if you do not have particular needs to shoot in the evening or indoors, OnePlus 9 will be worth the 9 Pro.

There is obviously no match for the zoom speech. With the 9 Pro you can get to 3.3 times without loss of detail, up to 5X with very slight loss. With the 9 instead you will simply get a fully digital 2X.

Even the optical stabilization, present only on the 9 Pro, by a large hand but also the electronic one present on the 9 does an excellent job.

The videos are really great on both phones, although you can get to the absurd resolution 8K is 30fps, I recommend you turn them in 4K or FullHd at 60fps where you will find the best result.

The selfie cam is the same therefore same results.

PROJECTED IMPACT

At this point you will have to draw your own conclusions and evaluate which one for you could be the best of these 2 beautiful phones. Recall that on Banggood you can take them home for about 500 € (560 € the 256Gb version) the 9 and 660 € (750 € the 256Gb version) the 9 Pro, with an official OP warranty valid for one year.

In my opinion the choice is quite simple: do you love the flat display? OP 9 .. do you love the curved ones? Op 9 Pro. Are you looking for an IP68 waterproof device? then necessarily OP 9 Pro (the 9 is not certified). But above all do you want the best OP cameraphone? then you will have to go to the 9 Pro! But I think that, given the only difference that emerges between the 2 is only in the photos at night or zoom, net of the cameraphone fan this price difference is not justified and I would recommend the OnePlus 9.
