The Android smartphone update policy is more or less the same for all companies. Whether it's Android custom skin updates or security updates, each company guarantees three and four respectively. OnePlus will provide four major OxygenOS updates and five years of ad security updates some new devices that will launch in 2023. Confirmed at a OnePlus community event in London, the company said the decision was partly driven by a recognition that more people are keeping their smartphones for longer. Gary Chen, head of software products at OnePlus, said:
We do everything possible to improve the user experience. With more users keeping their devices for longer, we want to make sure we can offer that option. This new update policy will give users access to the latest security features and features needed to supercharge OnePlus' signature fast and smooth experience throughout the life of the phone.

The change replaces the current commitment to provide three years of major updates and four years of security updates. It also corresponds to Samsung's update policy and manages to beat Google's policy. According to Google, the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro will receive major Android version updates through the end of 2025, which means about three years of support.
It is undoubtedly great news, but what it is unclear when the first smartphones will arrive that will take advantage of this new updated policy. We would expect the new update policy to apply to the upcoming OnePlus 11 series.
