CONFEZIONE

The Oukitel U20 Plus is contained within an apparently elegant black color package featuring at the top of the box the rear profile of the smartphone in the three color variants, that is, in gray (the color we tested), gold champagne and rose gold. Inside in addition to the smartphone we find a screen protection film already applied, very useful for buggers like me that I could benefit on multiple occasions while protecting the display from scratches. In addition to completing the security-related equipment there is also one transparent soft silicone cover which does not weigh the smartphone design and increase its grip. Present the charger wall with European connection and output to 5.0 V / 1 A, charging cable and micro USB data transfer, clips for removing the SIM cart and a small multilingual quick guide including Italian. It is very common to smartphones of the same price range as it does not provide, as with Chinese tradition, any headset provided.

DESIGN AND MATERIALS

Needless to deny it, but the design of the OUUITT U20 Plus It is inspired to the most famous iPhone 7 Plus from which it inspires it also for the presence of double camera on the back at the top left coupled to a flash monotone lenses. Always on the back we find the Oukitel logo and the presence of the fingerprint sensor enclosed in circular milling. On the left side of the device there is the On / Off button and two other buttons equivalent to volume + and - made of metal. Although the layout of the keys I found it uncomfortable to use them because I often confused the on / off key with that of the volume - and vice versa, so it might be appropriate to equip at least one of the buttons with a relief work in in order to highlight their recognition.

The top profile is dedicated exclusively to the earphone input but no second microphone presence, the right profile instead houses the SIM carriage, the main in Micro format, and the secondary in Nano format, or you can opt for the "expansion of internal memory through Micro SD provided that it does not give up dual SIM functionality. Finally, the lower profile of the device provides the input for the micro USB cable and dual grid of which the dx dedicated to the main microphone and the sx dedicated to the system speaker, all outlined by two screws that hold anchored shell made entirely of polycarbonate. Frontally we have one display with 5.5 inches with 2.5D edge, soft touch buttons designed directly on the non-backlit, vibration-free body, front camera and brightness and proximity sensor. As previously mentioned, the design is inspired by the Apple home model, though it retains the typical features of an Android device, offering rounded lines that provide good overall grip even without the help of the supplied cover. In fact, the smartphone is not slippery but the weight that in some respects can be considered a value but for many others is definitely a defect, since the weight of 195 grams during the day it is felt.

DISPLAY

TheU20 Plus panel is a drive from 5.5 inches of SHARP production with resolution Full HD 1920 x 1080. The display is apparently the strong point of the smartphone, at least for its price range, as it provides a great balance between saturation and contrast with natural and vivid colors. The technology used is of a type IPS that on black does not return the best of if it tends to turn the color towards the gray especially at high slopes of the display.

Even when displaying the pixel grid, you may notice the alignment of the display incorrect. Instead the white ones are clean as well as the viewing angles are very wide but unfortunately the display is limited to a construction with 3 only touches simultaneously, although general fluidity has always been appreciable. It features software on the Miravision to optimize contrast, saturation, brightness, sharpness, and color temperature depending on your personal taste. The brightness of the display in closed environments offers a good range but in direct light situations it is difficult to read the screen even though the brightness sensor works very well. Finally, you can awaken the display by making a double tap but it can not be used to extinguish the same, while the oleophobic treatment is virtually absent by holding fingerprints and dirt in general. It should also be reported that there is no support for MKV files or files in 4K and UHD that only play the audio track but not the video.

HARDWARE

To feed the U20 Pus thinks the processor MediaTek MT6737T a quad clock frequency clock 1.44 GHz Cortex A53 64-bit architecture, which results poco energivorous but at the same time more powerful than previous generation SOCs. Support is also found 2 GB of RAM which provide good stability even the stressful situations in which we put the phone. 16 GB is the internal memory fortunately available expandable via micro SD up to 128 GB. Surprisingly, in more stressful activities such as gaming, the smartphone showed no signs of slowing down or difficulties thanks to the GPU Mali T720 that for example with the game Real Racing 3, with a very fast loading, returns graphic details to the maximum and a good framerate, although it should be noted the slight overheating in the lower part of the device at the height of the fingerprint sensor.

The Oukitel U20 Plus also has connectivity LTE with the presence of the 20 band to 800 MHz, therefore with full support to all Italian telephone operators. The  802.11 Wi-Fi a / b / g / n it is monoband at 2.4 GHz but the signal coverage was very good and the coupling very fast. Even the form Bluetooth 4.0 he never gave any problems unlike the GPS module which on several occasions has given signs of uncertainty. The initial fix is not very quick, especially if it is carried out in areas with many buildings, but when done, it guarantees the navigation as long as you are not in a hurry to go towards your destination. Especially in situations where it is necessary to change the route compared to the one indicated, the GPS will be confused with a pretty embarrassing signal resumption.

Il fingerprint reader Backside was unreliable in situations where I quickly tried to unlock the device while situations where I was able to operate calmly came to an end. The reliability, however, does not arise from the quality of the sensor but from the surface dedicated to it, in fact, if the same had been achieved slightly larger these problems would not have occurred. That said, it is reported that through the sensor you can block access to applications, answer incoming calls, take pictures, take screenshots, return to the home of your phone or to the previous level of an application, play a music track or video. Perhaps functions that some may not affect but still enjoyable to find already implemented in a ROM.

AUDIO AND RECEPTION

The Oukitel U20 Plus is a device dual SIM dual standby which therefore houses two SIM cards, one in Micro format and one in Nano format, or you can choose to expand the internal memory via Micro SD card with support up to 128 GB, renouncing in this case the dual SIM functionality. Despite the low end of the market in which it is located, the U20 Plus has a connectivity LTE on both slots with the possibility of switching the hot-switched network between one SIM and the other. There is the 20 to 800 MHz band which makes navigation smooth in 4G even for operators like Wind. The management of the two SIMs is in the classic MediaTek style: so you can set a different color for a single SIM, associate a name with the card, set up a default card for calls and messages, or choose which SIM to use from time to time but unfortunately it is not You can differentiate ringtones or notifications.

Hands-free audio has one fairly high volume to allow a good conversation even in a car, at least at moderate speeds and I must say that I have never found it metallic or distorted, even even during a call through the headset the sound was clean and satisfying. Listening to music is poorly low while high frequencies are emphasized but there is a software level small equalizer from which to choose predefined levels or to set a custom setting.

SOFTWARE

The ROM running on the OUUELIT U20 Plus is pretty much the same Android stock in 6.0 Marshmallow version with some small ones customizations by the manufacturer. Customizations concern the Home that enjoys one owner launcher where it is possible between 6 different themes which will change the icons and the background, or you can choose the icons and the background, transition effect between one page and another because the app drawer is not present. However, the launcher is not stable on many occasions I had to finish the running process and restart it as Home applications disappeared from the Home screen or screen portions, but in any case it is easy to get rid of by installing alternative launchers.

Other customization is found in the Voice Settings menu Intelligent Assistantfrom here you can to program the power on and off of the device at certain times, or set shortcuts via gestures on screen off from which we could directly access the set application, provided however to sacrifice security through the fingerprint release as each gesture will ask for the pin or password unlock.

Unfortunately, the supplied programs are affected by the old MediaTek graphics and so the music player, file manager, calendar or gallery make the smartphone look like an already outdated and unobtrusive model.

But the function of the Super Screenshot through which we could make one long screenshot, ie merging up to a maximum of 10 screenshots in a series useful for example to capture an entire web page, or the sfunny creenshot for example, screenshots of screen portions with figures designed to our liking, and finally screen recorder which will allow you to capture in video format everything that happens on your display with the ability to record finger touches.

Common tasks such as browsing in the browser, Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp, Telegram etc. are performed impeccably, though not very fast at opening time. In conclusion it should be noted the possibility of update the ROM through OTA and unfortunately the translation of ROM into a non-native Italian language.

BENCHMARK

CAMERA

The peculiarity of OuKitu U20 Plus is the presence of one triple camera, ie one front and two rear. The dual rear camera should ensure better brightness and sharpness of the photos taken. In particular we find a unit from 13 Megapixel with Sony IMX135 Sensor coupled to the other camera by 0.3 Megapixel. Specifically, the two cameras work together when the SLR function with which the software will go to simulate the focal opening of a reflex making the background of the photographed subject more or less blurred by capturing a greater amount of light than the traditional shot. Given that the manufacturer declares an interpolation of the camera from 13 Megapixel to 16 and that this interpolation has not been found in any way, I can say that shots in good brightness are more than enough even though background noise is always present in every shooting situation.

Unfortunately it is also no autofocus which forces us to tap every time on the screen to focus the subject more or less close. Indeed, the dual camera captures more light and returns photos of more natural colors but overall it must be the true PLUS of the smartphone that unfortunately does not match the name, but in situations of evening shots it is appreciated its presence. The camera application allows some to use real-time filters, a digital zoom up to 4x, a chance to shoot panoramic photos or take advantage of the 'HDR, but above all, it has some great settings to customize the performance of photos and videos. Even the front camera, a drive from 5 Megapixel with 4 Sensor: 3, it retains the same results as the rear camera.

Even in this case, the manufacturer declares a interpolation to 8 Megapixel which I have not found anyway but it is mainly stated that the selfie camera guarantees spectacular shots even in low light conditions, but as you have already figured out the statement does not go as well step with reality. Videos are shot with a resolution up to 1080p is 30 fps with the possibility to take advantage of the Digital Image Stabilizer (EIS). In this case, the yield is significantly higher than the photos, and even the captured audio is appreciable and of good quality.

BATTERY

The battery is a unit not removable with capacity of 3300 mAh which may seem few given the size of the display but thanks to the processor poco energy eater manage to guarantee a full use day with at least 20% of residual charge with a medium-intense use, also because surely this is not the smartphone for a super-smart user. In any case, the function of super savings which will prolong the battery life as it will limit the use of data consumption, active connections and applications by making available only the phone, the address book, the SMS messages. Unfortunately, the supplied charger has the output at 1A and recharging is very slow, in fact it takes about 4 and a half / 5 hours to complete the recharge.

PRICE

The Oukitel U20 Plus is located in flash sale at the online store GearBest.com, which I personally thank for sending the sample, a poco less than € 91,00. The price is interesting considering the features that the smartphone offers. We will have in hand a ready-to-use phone that, though with some uncertainty, can guarantee all the daily operations that the user can not give up.

PROJECTED IMPACT

THEOukitel U20 Plus first impressed personally did not impress me but with the use I began to appreciate the qualities and limits. Probably at the same price you can find better but overall the U20 Plus is an easy-to-use and ready-to-use terminal, so it's recommended to all users who do not need top-of-the-range performance but are looking for stability in the ' daily use. The endowment, with the exception of the earbuds, is designed for all users who do not want to spend more money on their smartphone but they do not have time or any idea where to look for accessories for their device. Personally, I have never had any problems with sudden loss of notifications or crashes. The autonomy has always been faithful to me until the evening without the worry of having to charge the device while I was away from home. Operations that may seem despicable but often also some top of the range fail to guarantee.

Nerd, Geek, Netizen, terms that do not belong to me. Simply myself, technology lover and provocative as Xiaomi does with his products. High quality at fair prices, a real provocation for the other most famous brands.

Hi I just bought the device. I have many problems with data coverage. Sometimes it takes a lot of other does not take it right. And fix the satellites I could not do it, even after 20 minutes. I would not have liked a fake version of the device. My has the green led and the device is black. I've tried some very basic games and it does a lot of work with frame cuts.

Hello, as you have seen, we did not detect those problems. To exclude any software problems, I suggest you upgrade (if available) or reset it.
If the situation does not change, contact the seller because it looks like a bad model.

Hi, I read your review with great interest and then bought the Oukitel U20 plus which arrived on time and quickly today. Thanks first of all for the valuable information. I would like to ask you a couple of things that as a layman I can not find on my mobile: 1. where to set the fingerprint unlock (I only found where to use the fingerprint reader as a button for photos or to browse browsers, etc.) but not where to unlock recognizing the footprint. 2. how to set the double tap to wake up the display (which you say in the review can be done but I can't find it despite having searched for it.... Read the rest »
