After anticipating them for weeks, google has finally launched the new Pixel 7 series, which includes both the basic and the Pro versions; let's go and discover them together.
Official Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro: new Tensor G2 chip and many other improvements
Let's start with the Pixel 7 Pro, Google's new flagship arrives with a 6,71-inch AMOLED display. It is a QHD + LTPO panel with a variable refresh rate of 10-120Hz. The sides of the display aren't curved like last year, but they're still protected by Gorilla Glass Victus.
The smartphone is powered by Samsung's Tensor G2 chip with a 4nm manufacturing process, not exactly great but still an improvement over the 5nm chip used for the previous year's chip.
Notably the CPU includes 2x Cortex-X1, 2x A76 and 4x A55, albeit with a slight increase in clock speed. The GPU is now a Mali-G710 MC10, which promises an increase in performance and efficiency for graphics but also a 35% increase for machine learning activities compared to the G78. There is also a new Tensor core and a new integrated modem.
Google also revealed that the next-generation Tensor processing unit is capable of performing machine learning tasks 60% faster and 20% more efficiently.
Tensor is used for features like Photo Unblur, which is exclusive to Pixel 7 and 7 Pro - it uses Google's advanced AI to remove blur and noise from old photos taken years ago with any old phone. Obviously the photos taken on Pixel 7 series are also better.
As for RAM and memory, the smartphone comes with 12 GB of RAM, you can choose between 128 GB, 256 GB and 512 GB of storage space. As always there is no microSD slot.
As for the photographic sector, the Pixel 7 Pro has a main module that still uses a 50 MP 1 / 1,31 ″ (1,2 µm) sensor with the option for 4-in-1 binning. /1.85 has an 82 degree field of view. Then there is the 12 MP (1,25 µm) ultra wide-angle camera with FoV of 125,8 degrees and autofocus, which allows it to take macro photos. Finally there is a telephoto lens with 5x optical magnification, compared to 4x. The camera has a resolution of 48 MP, which allows it to zoom further digitally.
For selfies, the smartphone has a 10,8MP sensor with a wide field of view of 92,8 degrees. The lens still has a fixed focus.
We point out that the main camera has optical image stabilization (OIS) and electronic stabilization, it can record 4K videos at 30 fps and 60 fps. There is also the "speech enhancement" function which can now also be enabled in 4K / 60fps mode. Additionally, the camera app leverages the machine learning capabilities of the Tensor G2 chipset to create cinematic blurring or further stabilize handheld footage.
The Pixel 7 Pro packs a 5000mAh battery, the same capacity as last year, and supports fast charging, wireless and reverse wireless charging.
For the rest, the smartphone has an IP68 degree of protection for dust and water resistance. There is also an on-screen fingerprint reader, which is fast and secure, but you can also use face unlock.
Moving on to the Pixel 7, the smartphone is both cheaper and smaller. It also uses the Tensor G2 chip along with 8GB of RAM and you can choose between 128GB and 256GB of storage.
The Pixel 7 has a 6,3-inch AMOLED display with FHD + resolution and still has a refresh rate of just 90 Hz, like its predecessor.
For photos, the Pixel 7 uses a 50 MP (1 / 1,31 ″, 1,2 µm) main camera, flanked by a 12 MP ultra wide-angle camera. If you want zoom, you use the 50MP main sensor along with Google's Super Res Zoom image processing algorithm, which has been greatly improved thanks to the additional processing power available on the G2 chipset. Again, for selfies there is a 10,8MP sensor with a wide field of view of 92,8 degrees.
Being a smaller and also lighter smartphone, 155,6 x 73,2 x 8,7 mm and 197 grams to be precise, the Pixel has a smaller 4.355 mAh battery than its predecessor (it was 4.614 mAh). However, the more efficient hardware means that Extreme Battery Saver mode can last up to 72 hours.
Finally, for prices, the Google Pixel 7 starts at € 650 for the 128 GB version, while the Pixel 7 Pro has a starting price of € 900 for the 128 GB version. Pre-orders begin today, sales will begin on September 13th.
