Qualcomm has updated its chipset range with a new version of the popular Snapdragon 8 Elite, but with a surprise: a 7 core configuration. This new variant has just been added to Qualcomm’s official website, providing additional choice for mobile device manufacturers.
Qualcomm Relaunches the Snapdragon 8 Elite, But There's a Surprise!

While the standard version of the Snapdragon 8 Elite that we know features an octa-core CPU, this new variant has a slightly different configuration. The 7-core chipset includes two Prime cores with a frequency of up to 4,32 GHz and five Performance cores with a frequency of up to 3,53 GHz. Lacking a Performance core compared to the standard version, this configuration could offer a cheaper option for manufacturers.
This hepta-core CPU is identified by the part number SM8750-3-AB. Qualcomm suggests that this version may be used by OEMs looking to save costs, without significantly compromising performance. These are likely select parts, produced in the same way, but with a Performance core disabled to address any issues during production.

The introduction of this 7-core variant could be a smart strategy for manufacturers looking to keep costs under control. By offering an alternative solution with a slight reduction in performance, Qualcomm allows savings on components without drastically impacting the day-to-day user experience.
It will be interesting to see how the market responds to this new option. Some consumers may not notice the difference in performance, while others may dismiss this version as less capable than the octa-core variant. However, the potential for cost savings could make this new configuration attractive to many mobile device manufacturers.
The reveal of the 7-core version of the Snapdragon 8 Elite could influence the strategy of other chipset manufacturers, pushing them to explore similar configurations to meet the demand for more affordable solutions. This move demonstrates Qualcomm's ability to adapt to market needs and offer diversified solutions for various price segments.
