It's been a little over a month and a half since the company Xiaomi has released an important update for its application We Fit with which to synchronize his highly appreciated Mi Band, bringing it to the version 3.0. Xiaomi is very active in the wearable sector and on that occasion also presented AmazFit Bip, a cheap sportwatch produced by Huami that we already know for his beloved AmazFit e AmazFit Health Band. So today we present the complete review of the AmazFit Bip, thanking the store Gearbest.com for sending the sample.
The sales package is very elegant with a first card depicting the image of the AmazFit Bip and some technical specifications while the actual box is totally white except for the company logo on the lid. The package offers us sportwatch like a watch bought in jewelry, which wraps a cardboard structure that also incorporates one small box containing the instruction manual strictly speaking the Chinese language and the Charging base with built-in USB cable, but beware the base will only serve to recharge our wearable and will not perform data transfer functions or anything else like it was for the AmazFit.
Although the price is really cheap the quality offered by the materials is really excellent, from soft silicone strap, the same adopted also for the AmazFit with dimension by 22 mm of width with fast release attachment and that can be replaced with any other strap on the market. The offered wearability is really comfortable and even after activities with intense sweating we do not feel any discomfort on the wrist, also because of the reduced weight of only 32 grams (measure 1950 x 350 x 80 mm). Also the strap fits any wrist with the presence of 14 holes each separated with a distance of 5 mm and for the slimmest wrists there is no problem as the excess part of the strap can be contained by the loop. The buckle is made of highly resistant plastic.
Also the chest of the AmazFit Bip, rectangular in shape is made of polycarbonate that although it might discourage the idea of solidity I assure you it is highly resistant, and with the presence of IP68 certification we could use our sportwatch even while we are bathing or showering, or swimming in the pool.
That said on the back of the chest we find the heart rate sensor and of two charging connectors through the supplied base. On the right side is instead a small multifunction button which will allow you to turn on the device, activate it from standby or go back a screen with respect to the menu we are in.
On the front we will find the AmazFit and the color touch display from 1,28 in (compared to the 1,77 inches of total surface size) with protection Corning Gorilla Glass e 2.5D machining. The screen is of transflective type, or more direct light receives and better will result in the visibility that is in every way guaranteed by Integrated backlighting which can be activated by pressing the multi-function button or by setting the wrist rotation gesture using the application settings.
The actual backlight duration is 10 seconds. The transflective display also allows a considerable battery saving as it makes the backlight unnecessary during daylight hours.
And about battery we find on board the AmazFit Bip aunit from 190 mAh which promises one duration of 45 days in standby. Indeed with a standard use, which provides on average receiving at least 40 notifications, activity tracking for an average of 30 minutes, backlighting set to 50%, heart rate monitor off during sleep and Bluetooth connection to the smartphone always active, we will be able to get a performance equal to 19 / 20 full days (a discharge of about 5 / 6% per day), far far away from the month and half of departure but definitely great if compared to wearable similari lasting up to 2 days. Anyway, it will take about 2 half an hour to fully charge the battery and be able to put the AmazFit Bip back on your wrist.
The AmazFit Bip offers the Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity for the coupling to the smartphone on which to synchronize the data but also a GPS chip to 28 nanometer produced by Sony which also exploits the GLONASS technology so that the geolocation is quick and precise, with the possibility of use even without pairing with the smartphone as the sportwatch is able to record the GPS track collected during sports activity. Among the various sensors we find that one PPG related to heart rate, accelerometer to 3 axes, geomagnetic sensor and a pressure sensor who switch to barometer and compass. If you are fond of teardowns in general and like to see our sportwatch naked, then click on the button below for photos of internal components. All the sensors work excellently and above all the cardio sensor seemed to me to be particularly precise and reliable as well as the actual counting of the steps is well calibrated resulting in a negative 3% "stared" compared to more professional models.
Due to the due presentation, let us now see the various menus of the AmazFit Bip which we will access by performing one swipe to the left from the home screen. From the initial screen, scrolling from top to bottom, we will directly access the mode "do not disturb" in order to silence any notifications. There is also a Bluetooth icon to check the connection with the smartphone and the percentage of remaining battery charge.
This mode is proposed in two variants, the first will allow you to silence all notifications when you activate it (green moon), the second one is a sort of "do not disturb" smart that will start working when you go to sleep (blue moon). Scrolling from bottom to top instead you can read the application notifications (up to a maximum of 5) to which, however, it is not possible to answer except from your smartphone. Speaking of notifications, it should be noted that AmazFit Bip is also able to notify the calls incoming with caller ID. Also for calls it is not possible to answer but you can reject the call or silence the notification.
Starting from the start screen we find the first menu named Home through which it is possible to view the usage statistics relating to distance steps, heart rate, distance traveled, calories burned and number of warnings received about physical inactivity. This data is continuously measured by the Amazfit Bip.
Il second menu is the one related to sports activities through which we can choose 4 different modes sports, including race, treadmill, bicycle, walk. Also you can see it history of the activities carried out or set some settings, that is to set the automatic pause, set an alert when we reach a certain heart rate or an alert when a certain defined time for training is reached.
Il third menu it is relative to weather which will use the GPS position or you can set the location using the application. Indications concerning minimum and maximum temperatures will be provided up to 5 days as well as weather forecasts.
Through the fourth menu it's possible set an alarm clock up to a maximum of three events. The alarm it will not be sound but through vibration which is however very pronounced but not noisy and that even during deep sleep is easily perceived.
Since fifth menu instead it comes to the function of stopwatch or timer. The sixth menu instead it provides the function of compass which will be calibrated initially by making the infinity symbol by turning the sportwatch.
Since seventh and last menu we can access the basic settings of the AmazFit Bip. The menu provides five subcategories through which we can choose the watchface (there are 9) of the home screen.
We can choose which predefined sport mode among the 4 present start automatically if we press the multi-function button for 3 seconds. We can set the backlight level, view the firmware version and the Bluetooth address and finally turn off the device.
And if in spite of this you cannot memorize the simple instructions and the icons in Chinese displace you enough, I am attaching the image relating to the exploded view of the AmazFit Bip menu in English for easier consultation and understanding.
The AmazFit Bip has inherited all the features of the Xiaomi Mi Band 2 evolving with the adoption of GPS and IP68 certification, and the application with which to synchronize the data collected by the sportwatch is precisely the famous Mi Fit in 3.0 version. I won't give you a presentation because we know the application quite well and I'll just tell you that to get the AmazFit Bip to better synchronize with Mi Fit 3.0 you need to download a moddata version of the same from developer PostMan, through which we will not have problems related to A-GPS update, and also we will be able to synchronize all the data which is not possible with the application present on the Play Store. For iOS users (poor them) there is no moddata version and they will have to settle for the default one.
In conclusion we should start from the fact that similar products to the AmazFit Bip also cost 200 euro while the paltry price of the same offers the same functions and performance and for those who practice sports at an amateur level the Xiaomi / Huami sportwatch is a good choice. If we then add the IP68 certification, the excellent construction and great autonomy then I could certainly say that the AmazFit Bip is one of the best hybrids between smartwatch and smartband for both sports and everyday use. You can buy it on the store on line Gearbest.com that I thank again for sending the sample and that as always I recommend you for the reliability and variety of products offered, making it the best to turn to for technological gadgets from China.
