Xiaomi Mi Band 2 Review - Another hub for Xiaomi

Here is my personal opinion on the new wearable Xiaomi home, Mi Band 2. After having had the "day one" all other 3 previous versions (1 with colored LEDs, 1 with white LEDs and 1S) I want to give you more my impressions rather than snatch technical features that I will nevertheless report.

Novelties and aesthetic differences

Let's start with the aesthetic that inevitably resembles that of the previous generations but that fits the big news this year or the presence of the display. The strap is of the same length as the others, is wider but thinner and a softer and more comfortable material. Even the "pin" for lacing has changed: it is black, smaller but also provides a good seal.

Le capsule size they are obviously more generous especially in length (3mm more) but I must confess that from the photos it seemed more "chubby" instead once worn it still returns a good proportion and however, remains a small object. Perhaps even by the presence of the display, Mi Band abandoned the "bumpy" appearance that was very scratched and bumped by preferring a flat top slightly protected from the strap.

Technical novelties

We come to the technical aspect that as mentioned above focuses on great news about the presence of the OLED display (monochrome) by 0.42 inches that provides all the information (with the exception of those on sleep) that previously we could only find from the application: steps taken, calories burned, distance traveled, heart rate and remaining battery. Added to these is the possibility of reading the timetable which, albeit trivial, in fact allows to abandon the clock in favor of the smart band.

Display information is also well read in the sunlight, I am not convinced that glass is scratch-proof and are already looking for protection.

The other novelty is the presence of an anodized button round that allows you to control the Mi Band. Pressing it will show cyclically all the information gathered by the sensors. The information to be displayed on display can be chosen by the application Fit me so you can quickly access only the data that interests us most.

The presence of the display and the control also allows to read the heartbeat directly from the device without the need to use the phone. Data is then synchronized when the Mi Band is connected to the phone.

The gesture to "awaken" the Mi Band has been greatly improved and is activated on average 9 times out of 10 (before 3 out of 10) making it pleasant to use, for example, to read the time. Now it is sufficient to rotate the wrist in a decisive way, which however exposes it to some accidental activation.

On the battery, strong point in the previous versions, I can not say yet, having "played" a lot and still being at the first charge cycle. Of course the 70mAh, compared to the 40 of the previous version, will at least partially cover the consumption of the display, guaranteeing about 20 days of autonomy. I remind you that the notifications that you decide to enable will have a great impact on this data, both for the need for a permanent connection to the bluetooth (4.0 second generation) and for the vibration and the display that every time will affect, albeit minimally, autonomy.

Notifications have also received a small upgrade since the presence of the display allows differentiate the application that sent them. In the tests of these days I saw 3 appear different icons: a cartoon with 3 dots inside, a comic with the word "app" inside and the whatsapp symbol. Unfortunately, despite having active notifications from Telegram, Whatsapp, Facebook Messenger, Skype and SMS, these different icons appeared quite randomly, a sign that probably From the firmware point of view there is still something to be done. Definitely once refined you will be able to understand the origin of the notification without having to consult the phone. Let's wait.

Obviously, all the functions that have always characterized the Mi Band are also present. Pedometer, which consists of a new and more precise algorithm. Count calories burned and distance traveled (based on the steps). Monitoring sleep quality, assisting the heart sensor. Reader of heartbeat.

Conclusions

In the expectation of this version I have tried many smartphones / smartwatches in this price range and came to the conclusion that it is by no means easy to realize and compact so much technology into such a small and cheap item. I could see so many failures to make me prefer the absence of the display!

Xiaomi, on the other hand, has succeeded, creating a simple, robust, cheap device that (not at all obvious) works well! Even the same dedicated MiFit app, available in all languages for free on the Google PlayStore and Apple Store, continues to be a plus for the Mi Band.

You can buy Xiaomi Mi Band 2 on GearBest to 33 € standard shipping included. I recommend to prefer the expedition of ItalyExpress that at the front of 1,4 € has no customs costs and employs 10 days.
