We are experiencing a historical moment in which smartphones classified as entry level have a lot to offer and poco to envy to the higher-end models. Compared to the past, there are very few compromises to be made, all for the benefit of our finances, considering that with a sum of less than 200 euros you can take home a device that can satisfy every need, even the most demanding of gaming. This is the case of the new Redmi 10, from poco made official by the Chinese brand and which makes performance a workhorse. With today I will tell you why to choose him, compared to the many models on the market. We had the honor of trying it in preview thanks to the store partner Goboo and in this review we will tell you about our experience.
Nothing particular as regards the look of the sales package, a classic white hardcover with the image of the product represented in the first place, but on the other hand what interests us is the content that specifically provides the following equipment:
- Redmi 10;
- Pin for removing the SIM tray;
- Transparent silicone cover with refill input protection cap;
- Manuals (Italian is also present);
- Wall power supply with 10V / 2.25A - 22.5W output;
- USB Type-C charging and data transfer cable;
- Pre-applied plastic film to protect the display.
Head: 0,590 W / Kg, Body: 0,995 W / Kg (5mm distance).
The Redmi 10 stands out from the first contact, compared to the mass, due to a design that takes inspiration from the top of the range of the Xiaomi and Redmi brand, resulting modern and captivating, giving the impression that this smartphone goes far beyond the entry segment level, net of materials commonly defined as poor.
In fact, the entire body is made of polycarbonate, with a matte paint, which unfortunately does not offer much as an oleophobic treatment, as the fingerprints and dirt in general will be clearly visible, forcing us if we are fanatical about cleaning to use the cover in equipment. Cover that will also be useful for leveling the step that is created between the body and the projection of the photographic module, a rectangle in which 4 optics and a single tone LED flash are inserted.
The side frame is also made of plastic and considering the economic nature of the device, the step between it and the display, typical of low-end devices, should be reported, but in any case (at least in the color we tested) the result at a glance the eye is still pleasant. On the profiles we then find in the upper part the second microphone for the reduction of noise in calls, the IR transmitter, 3,5 mm jack input to take advantage of wired earphones and a slot used for the stero sound that Redmi 10 offers.
Oh yes, despite the economic nature, Redmi 10 is one of the few devices in this range to offer stereo sound, thus relying on a second speaker positioned in the lower frame, which also houses the USB Type-C input for charging the device and support OTG and the main microphone.
Speaking of stereo sound, I must specify that the audio coming out of the two speakers is unbalanced, first of all because in terms of volume, the lower speaker offers a higher level than the upper one but above all because the sound spectrum results with a dominant frequency. medium-high. This "defect" however translates into an advantage if we are in noisy environments and still want to listen to multimedia content without using headphones, while the audio in the ear capsule is crystal clear and the microphone does its job very well.
Another design note and attention to detail in Redmi 10, we find them on the left profile where the volume rocker and the power button stand out, the latter inserted in a slight recess, which integrates the fingerprint sensor. A solution that I personally prefer over finger IDs under the display, due to the reliability in unlocking and the speed with which they perform the action. In fact, that of Redmi 10 is also particularly easy in unlocking both with right and left hands.
Finally, on the left profile, alone, there is the SIM tray capable of hosting 2 SIMs in nano format but also micro SD with support up to 512 GB, all without giving up the functionality of the Dual SIM Dual Standby. In this regard, I have always benefited from the 4G + signal with excellent navigation performance and signal stability.
Redmi 10 is not a compact smartphone but still pleasant to handle even with a single hand, thanks to the 181 grams of weight well distributed as well as dimensions of 161,95 x 75,53 x 8,92 mm. But what is particularly surprising is the display, apparently with similar specifications to many other panels in circulation on the medium-low range of the market.
We are talking about a 6,5-inch diagonal screen with IPS LCD technology and Full HD + resolution (2400 x 1080 pixels), with a 20: 9 ratio and a density of 405 PPI, protected by a Corning Gorilla Glass 3. But a making the difference are the 90 Hz refresh rate that this display offers, making the multimedia experience very pleasant and smooth.
Chromatic fidelity is a further plus not to be underestimated, thus allowing us in the eventuality of editing photos even with applications such as Lightroom, basing the visual experience also on excellent contrasts and a superb touch response. It does not even disappoint the brightness of the display, allowing the viewing of contents on the screen even under direct sunlight. Returning to the refresh rate at 90 Hz, a future update will also offer the AdaptiveSync function, i.e. the refresh rate will be automatically adapted based on the condition of use of the smartphone, also positively impacting energy consumption.
Not that Redmi 10 needs it, since a large 5000 mAh battery has been inserted under the hood that supports fast charging at 18W, allowing it to perform in terms of autonomy even two full days with medium-intense use. But another gem that made me fall in love with this smartphone is the possibility of recharging other devices, such as wearable TWS headphones, smartphones etc .. through reverse charging at 9W.
Redmi 10 is pleasant in design also due to the fact that the frames around the display are rather contained. We can move in the interface through virtual buttons or through the convenient gestures, while at the level of awakening the device, we have the double Tap function or that of lifting the device. I also point out that the proximity and brightness sensor are real and their operation is academic while at the level of shortcomings, mention should be made of the notification LED.
In terms of connectivity Redmi 10 is quite complete, offering in addition to what has already been mentioned, also the Wi-Fi Dual Band a / b / g / n / ac, Bluetooth 5.1, FM radio, GPS / A-GPS / GLONASS / Galileo of which some criticalities do not emerge. The NFC sensor is missing or at least in the version we are testing, but if you direct your purchase for the top 6/128 GB version, even mobile payments will fall within the specifications of the device. Before going into the hardware specifications, I want to applaud further the possibility of unlocking the smartphone via unlock face, a 2D technology but rather effective, with optimal results even in absolute darkness, using a selfie camera inserted in a central hole in the part. top of the display.
The new MediaTek Helio G10 chipset moves the Redmi 88, an octa-core solution clocked up to 2.0 GHz and 12 nm production process which is accompanied by an ARM Mali-G52 MC2 GPU as well as 4 GB of RAM. LPDDR4X type and 64 GB of internal eMMC 5.1 storage expandable via microSD. Oh yes, from this point of view Redmi could do better, perhaps inserting a UFS memory, but in all honesty I did not find the system jerky or slowed down at all, on the contrary I was pleasantly surprised by the fluidity and smoothness of the system in general. In any case, on the market you will also find variants from 4 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage or 6/128 GB (with NFC).
Before you turn up your nose for the MediaTek processor, I invite you to think about what Qualcomm has done negatively in the low end. Just think of OnePlus N100 or a POCO M3, while the Helio G88 solution guarantees us good performance even in gaming, using titles such as Call of Duty Mobile and Asphalt 9 without particular problems. Moreover, in everyday life, with the use of messaging applications, internet browsing, social, streaming, etc. .. we find a faithful companion, counting on a good reactivity in the execution of the app and a textbook system stability. I have not found any particular bugs in the interface which is based on MIUI 12.5 with OS Android 11 and patch of July 2021, a UI that we already know very well, which bases its success on the excellent graphic aspect, fluidity and a large amount of customizations. Therefore, I will not dwell on MIUI 12.5 but I point out that in this version, 12.5.4, we already find the memory extension function, i.e. once active 1 GB of RAM will be added, occupying the internal memory, giving better performance. Finally, the device has a Widevine L1 certification allowing you to play the contents of the main streaming platforms in high quality, but on Amazon Prime Video this certification is not recognized. On the other hand, there is no support for HDR content.
One of the specifications that aroused particular interest during the presentation of Redmi 10 was that relating to the primary photographic sensor which specifically turns out to be a 50 MP with aperture f / 1.8 and PDAF autofocus. This is also associated with an ultrawide sensor of 8 MP, f / 2.2 FOV 120 ° and 2 lenses of 2 MP, f / 2.4 which perform the function of macro photography and depth of field data collection while for the selfie camera we rely on a 8 MP sensor, f / 2.0.
Here, from the photographic point of view Redmi 10 proves to be an entry level. Let's be clear I'm not shooting photos and videos in general, but the initial amazement of a new 50 MP sensor vanishes because the shots obtained do not differ much from devices in the same price range that we have already analyzed. Especially in unfavorable light conditions, the sensor shows its side and not even the night mode helps, where the presence of digital noise is particularly noticeable.
On the other hand, the shots in daytime are good, with excellent collection of details and faithful color rendering even using ultra wide-angle optics, although in this mode the saturation is too marked. At the software level, the automatic HDR that does its job very well, AI mode and portrait mode, particularly convincing in the yield. The macro mode, on the other hand, is more of a pastime in which to unleash your creativity while at the video level, we can record at a maximum resolution of 1080p 30fps, without any stabilization aid, neither optical nor digital, but the focus is pleasant, fast and cinematic type.
We must reveal the price of Redmi 10 that is offered on Goboo at 159 € in the 4 / 64GB variant, 179 € in the 4/128 GB variant and 189 € in the 6/128 GB one, using the exclusive discount code GAFF01. But it does not end there, because if you fall within the first 200 orders you will also be honored with the TWS Xiaomi Mi True Wireless Earphones 2 Basic headphones as well as a tempered glass film to protect the display.
It is therefore clear that at the price just mentioned Redmi 10 is undoubtedly a champion. Until a few years ago it would have been unthinkable to buy a good smartphone, reliable and pleasantly usable, for less than 200 euros. In short, devices like Redmi 10 always make us reflect on why to continue throwing money in the top of the range when with a small expense you can get the maximum yield. Special features, excellent autonomy, reliability and care in the software, immersion in multimedia contents and much more are some of the characteristics to describe this economic jewel, ideal for those looking for a reliable low cost solution. Redmi 10 could be the real business card to evaluate the entry into the MIUI world and Xiaomi ecosystem
