Redmi Series K20 receives the first update, now with Face Unlock

The latest Redmi K20 series is probably one of the most interesting ever presented by the Xiaomi sub-brand, Redmi. Smartphones have been on sale in China for a couple of days now and as we already know 12 June (at least the Mi 9T) will officially arrive in Italy. The strength of the two devices is obviously the excellent price-to-price ratio combined with a fairly attractive design.

Having said that, without any relevant software, all this hardware leaves the time it finds, but this would not seem to be the case.

Redmi K20 series

Redmi has in fact just released the first MIUI 10.3.8.0 update via OTA on the two devices. The update has a size of 329MB and as well as fixing some bugs, it also brings with it a much requested feature, the Face Unlock. With the new update it will be possible to unlock the device with the face. However, Redmi would like to remind you that this unlock mode is not as secure as a PIN, a password or a sign-off. In fact, a person with a similar face may be able to unlock the smartphone easily.

Furthermore, we add, since it is a release through a simple camera without any 3D mapping of the face, even a black and white photo could be enough.

The release with the face on the Redmi K20 series will be a little slower than that of devices such as the Xiaomi Mi 9, as you have to wait for the hidden pop-up camera to automatically exit before you can recognize the face. That said, it is a feature that can always be useful when you have dirty or wet hands, with which it would not be possible to use the fingerprint sensor.

The MIUI 10.3.8.0 update released with the Redmi K20 and Redmi K20 Pro will then most likely be available at launch with the already officially announced Xiaomi Mi 9T (ie the international Redmi K20), while of the Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro we don't have info from Xiaomi yet.

Redmi K20

The differences between the Redmi K20 and the K20 Pro are mainly two, the top-of-the-range processor on the K20 Pro, namely the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855, against the mid-ranger processor, the Snapdragon 730 also called "the small Snapdragon 855" in China. The other differentiation concerns the main image sensor, the Sony IMX586 on board the Pro version against the Sony IMX582 of the basic version. The two sensors seem to be very similar except for the fact that the Sony IMX582 does not have the support to shoot 4K videos at 60fps.
