Design and comfort
Let's start by saying that if you can't stand in-ear headphones, these SoundPeats Air 5 are the right model for you, as they adopt a semi-in-ear aesthetic, therefore their fit and comfort is guaranteed even for long hours. Despite not having a rubber to act as a "glue" with the ear, stability is maximum, even during sports activities, counting on an IPX5 certification and a weight of only 3,8 grams for each earphone.
The charging case is made of matte plastic that is not very oleophobic (weight with earphones 44,56 grams) and this is the only flaw I found, as it is prone to retaining a bit of fingerprints and dirt in general, but the construction is impeccable starting from the lid which also integrates the hall sensor for immediate connection with the associated device.
On the front of the case we find an LED light that notifies us of the battery charge status while a button to query this is positioned on the bottom, but if necessary it allows you to reset the headphones to the factory state. Also on the lower profile we find the Type-C input for charging via cable, the only way to charge the headphones as wireless charging is absent, while a note of merit goes to the sturdy hinge of the lid that does not make it swing even if shaken strongly.
The earphones are also made of plastic but they give a more premium feel than the charging box. The stem is not excessively long and therefore does not appear invasive on the face while on the external part of the drivers we find the touch surface through which to give commands.
Touch controls, connectivity and sound
The SoundPeats Air 5, as already mentioned, offer complete touch controls, with which to manage music and calls, but it is also possible to call up the voice assistant of the associated device, adjust the volume and change music listening mode, also enjoying the ANC function. Despite the semi-in-ear design, the ergonomic construction of the earphones means that these sound almost like in-ear headphones, that is, with a decidedly marked presence of bass but without smudges or misalignments with respect to the medium-high tones.
In this regard, these headphones are Hi-Res Audio Wireless certified but boast an additional audio quality certification, namely Snapdragon Sound, offering the aptX-HD adaptive codec, all using a Bluetooth 5.4 chipset (QCC3091 chip) which also offers multipoint connectivity, allowing you to pair the SoundPeats Air 5 with two devices at the same time, listening to music on one and managing calls on the other for example.
Despite their small size, these earphones express themselves through 13 mm drivers made of bio material (paper pulp imported from Japan, biofiber and carbon fiber) capable of returning a captivating and engaging musical journey, a natural sound, but the quality is not relegated to just listening to music or podcasts but also to calls, as we find 6 microphones (3 for each earphone) that using AI technology are able to reduce noise in conversation, separating your voice from the context in which you are, with excellent results, even with strong headwinds. Two microphones will take care of separating the voice from the environmental context and one will instead be mainly aimed at capturing the voice itself.
For better performance when moving and therefore when we are exposed to wind, on the drivers we find a windproof woven steel mesh structure that in combination with the dedicated AI algorithm manages to reduce wind by 90%. Furthermore, the earphones support a low latency gaming mode of only 77 ms when active as well as supporting frequencies ranging from 20 Hz to 40 KHz, therefore also ideal for gaming with titles in which you need to hear every little audio detail.
Autonomy and companion APP
Our SoundPeats Air 5 offer a 4000 mAh battery for the case and a 35 mAh unit for each earbud, which takes about 1,5 hours to charge, while the case takes 2 hours. The only way to charge the case is in wired form via Type-C, so there is no wireless charging, but the battery life settles at 30 hours in total, equal to 6 hours of use with a single charge. This value is destined to drop to about 4,5 hours if we use the aptX-HD codec, in any case a decidedly excellent battery life given the listening quality that these headphones give us. It is possible to use the individual earphones independently, effectively doubling the battery life. SoundPeats, always with the aim of offering a qualitatively supreme product in terms of audio, has thought of inserting the battery of the earphones in the form of a ring so that interference from the same is reduced to a minimum.
To manage some settings or to update the firmware, we find the new PeatsAudio app available on both Android and iOS devices. We have the possibility of activating an adaptive equalizer, that is, defining a personalized listening threshold based on your hearing (low, medium, high frequency signals will be sent that you will have to receive and if necessary answer yes or no to what is requested), but we can also choose between some presets or create our own equalizer. We can activate the game mode, check the battery levels and activate/deactivate the touch controls, which in some cases can be useful. We can also choose between 5 different ANC modes, of the smart type, as based on the context in which you find yourself, more or less noisy, they will return an ad hoc noise reduction. However, there is no transparency mode.
