It seems like an eternity has passed since Hugo Barra left the management of Xiaomi to follow the VR project on behalf of Facebook, while the announcement at Qualcomm's press conference at CES 2018 is recent that the first VR virtual reality viewer of Oculus will be made by Xiaomi, which will present a further model exclusively for China, by the end of this year and by the name Mi VR Standalone.
But let's first take a small step back: Oculus Go is a stand-alone viewer. This means that it is not necessary to connect to the computer or use a mobile phone. Instead of including earphones, the audio experience is integrated directly into the VR headset, but there is still the option to connect headphones via the 3,5mm jack. A controller will be present which will integrate with any apps that developers will create for the platform.
The Oculus Go will have a price of 199 dollars, about 166 euros while it will be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor, thus allowing the VR viewer to perform particularly complex films and applications. We are not clear about the availability dates but given the recent FCC approval as well as presentation at CES 2018 we expect a imminent launch.
But speaking of XIaomi, il Mi VR Standalone will have the same basic functionality as Oculus Go and the design will be virtually identical. Xiaomi's VR viewer will also support the Oculus Mobile SDK, which will allow developers to transfer their content to the Mi VR platform. Xiaomi said it is working to bring popular content from the Oculus store to its users in China.
