Official Xiaomi Mi 9 Explorer Edition: what changes compared to the Mi 8 EE?

It is from poco concluded thepresentation event of the new Xiaomi Mi 9 and surprises were not lacking, both positively and negatively. Lei Jun has shown a world premiere of the new top of the range of the Chinese brand that will take the much loved from the charts Xiaomi Mi MIX 3. But no more talk! Let's see what to expect from Mi 9 Explorer Edition and what are the pros and cons of this device.

Although aesthetics reminds us a lot of the "scandalous" Xiaomi Mi 8 EE, because of the astonishment that Xiaomi aroused when he decided to launch a device from transparent back (... or at least make believe it was), the differences between the two devices are noteworthy. Many will turn up their noses at the end of this short article - I am sure - but the performance jump it is the point on which we must dwell more.

Xiaomi Mi 9 Explorer Edition

Aesthetics

Everything just reminds us of the predecessor. Raise your hand if you did not think you saw Xiaomi Mi 8 when you saw the image above!

In reality some differences they are there and they will emerge in their everyday life. One above all is theergonomics: the thinning made on the edges of the body makes the Mi 9 more manageable and less bulky than the previous model. This variation, in fact, makes the new Xiaomi device slimmer by a few grams compared to the first Explorer Edition (173 g vs 177 g).

xiaomi Mi 9 Design

The most obvious change, however, will concern the front panel which will increase it screen-to-body ratio up to 90.7% with a not indifferent thinning of the frames (-40%). Where are those who criticized the Mi MIX 2 now? (you joke eh ...) This filing of the frames allows Xiaomi to place a slightly larger display (6.39 ") inside a device of the same size as the 8 Mi that stopped the diagonal of its front panel to 6.21".

Also this time, however, Xiaomi plays a little trick ...

As for Xiaomi Mi 8, the speech of the "faux-transparent" back also applies to Mi 9 Explorer Edition: the back cover it will not be actually transparent but the effect of the circuitry will be "simply" a print made on the back cover. Disappointed? Write it to us in the comments.

Hardware

Snapdragon 855 Mi 9

How not to start from Snapdragon 855? The heart of the new high-end smartphone is definitely the strength of the first device launched with this processor built with 7 nm technology. Lei Jun has enlightened us with the performance achievable by this small element: there is talk of an increase in 45% performance and a drastic reduction in consumption.

Mi 9 SD 855 performance

As Lei Jun had already told us, the new Snapdragon represents the performance jump that we have been waiting for a long time and that in recent years there had never been because of a spasmodic research aimed at containing consumption.

I would like to say: let's expect a great innovation this year from the point of view of the processors and consider that the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 It will be compatible with the 5G technology.

So, although the body of the Mi 9 EE it will not be transparent, the power of the new processor will be visible in the everyday thanks to the AMOLED display from 6.39 " and Adreno GPU 640 also on the other versions and thanks to the 12 GB of RAM memory LPDDR 4X.
Xiaomi wanted to focus also on the photographic sector that, apart from aesthetics, distinguishes the Mi 9 Explorer Edition from other versions. In fact, the triple rear camera, always supported by a sensor well 1 / 2 thumb and with resolution by well 48 Mpx, will have a 'focal aperture of f / 1.47 which ensures the capture of a greater amount of light and the ability to shoot with significantly shorter times. Result? Photo less moves and effect assured even at night.

The sensor will not be missing under the display, but it will also be present on other versions of Xiaomi Mi 9, nor the innovative wireless charging that reaches the 20W. Traditional 27W charging will allow 70% to charge the device in just 30 minutes. No difference regarding the battery that stops at 3300 mAh and that has already turned up their noses to the more attentive to the autonomy side.

But wait to draw hasty conclusions ... you will see that with the Snapdragon 855 the autonomy of Xiaomi Mi 9 will amaze you!

Conclusions

The preorders for China they have already been opened and the price of the transparent edition number two settles on 3999 yuan (524 euro).
But the event to be held next 24 February at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, we hope that this little gem can also be launched in a Global version with the implementation of the 20 band. Well ... maybe because it's not used in China, but during today's conference Lei Jun did not mention anything about this specification.

We therefore have only to have a shred of patience to understand if it will be fully compatible with European (and Italian) network frequencies and, above all, what will be the price for us Europeans.

We expect many comments from you and do not let yourself be misled: innovation very often is not just aesthetic ... if you look deeply at the differences compared to the 8 Mi there are!

Unfortunately, what is missing this year and which is holding me back from buying another smartphone is the absence of the new UFS 3.0 memories and DDR5 RAM. processors grow GPUs as well but the real leap will be with UFS and DDR5. Am I wrong? How about?
