How to watch YouTube videos in 4K without having an 4K display

By now, smartphones are becoming increasingly popular in our daily lives, and it is not a novelty that in many cases have taken the place of notebooks or tablets. And YouTube is now offering high quality content, often not accessible to everyone because of the quality of our smartphone displays.

After introducing i videos at 60 fps in 4K resolutiontherefore, many users can not play them in the top resolution by having to settle for a FULL HD resolution, or even HD Ready (720p). So let's see how to make sure that our device interfaces with the app or YouTube site in order to play videos in 4K.

As mentioned, not all users are able to play video on YouTube in 4K resolution. So, except for those with an 4K display device, let's see how to modify the system file that will allow us to set the 2180p in the videos.

  1. we open the ES File Explorer app and go to the system folder in the system root and there we find the file build.prop
  2. we back up the original build.prop file copying it to your PC
  3. click on the file and select to open it with ES Notes Editor
  4. let's go to the end and click on the top right on the 3 balls. Then we select a change.
  5. let's place ourselves at the bottom of the document and write:
    sys.display-size = 3840 2160 ×
  6. we click on the back button and the app will ask us to save the changes
  7. we save and open the YouTube app
  8. Now let's go back to the home, open the device settings, and open the app menu: select Youtube and let's close it. Then we delete the app data and restart the device
  9. At restart we open YouTube and we will note that when we choose to play a video in 4K, we can also select the maximum resolution.

Important Precisely
This change allows "4K resolution" to be enabled only on devices with Snapdragon processor 820 or later and with Mediatek Helio X20 processors and X25 or later because YouTube's 4K codec is already implemented. If you do not have a compatible device, you can take advantage of the 2K resolution.

There is conflicting information on the result of these operations on a low resolution display. Some sources say it is better to set the Full HD resolution (1080p). Try yourself and verify the best resolution.

Thank you xda's friends for the excellent guide and, in particular, the original developer Rizal Lovins which will allow us to finally play videos in 4K!

ehm I miss the usefulness of forcing a resolution higher than that actually allowed by the display…. apart from an increase in internet bandwidth required for the same video, I don't see what other changes there may be

On some devices, the YouTube app does not even allow you to select full HD despite having a full HD display
