What is a GaN charger, how it works and what advantages it has

The charger GaN it is not an invention, but a discovery that scholars have made to make charging devices (mobile or not) safer and faster. We thought it was interesting to understand how it worked since there is a lot of talk about it. There are many companies that have started to use it and among these we cannot mention Oppo e Xiaomi. As for the liquid lenses therefore, let's try to understand in depth how this technology works, what it is and what advantages it has.

How does GaN refill work? How are chargers of this type made? What advantages does it have compared to classic silicon charging?

Let's start with the name: GaN is not an acronym but a chemical formula which indicates the gallium nitride, a semiconductor material used in the creation of electronic devices. But let's start from the base: each device is composed of microprocessors or transistors and these are in turn composed of gallium nitride miniatures. This particular element was previously used for the creation of lLED lights e solar panels.

From the point of view of its composition, gallium nitride (or GaN) is crystal-like but it differs from the latter in one greater ability to conduct electrical voltage. Specifically, electricity passes inside gallium nitride components with more speed than those in “simple” silicon. Already from this we will have understood that the advantage of this type of loaders is not just one, but multiple:

  • space: inside a transistor there are more elements in GaN and this means that they can be placed closer to each other; this also results in more usable space, while reducing the size of a charger
  • time: as we said earlier, the peculiarity of gallium nitride is the ability to "transport" energy faster and this translates into a faster charge
  • safety: one thing that we haven't said, but which is fundamental, is that this material has a much higher heat resistance than silicon. Basically, a greater amount of current corresponds to a lower superheat (compared to silicon)
  • connector: Another advantage of chargers of this type is that they can charge all mobile devices via a USB Type C port
  • life: being more resistant, the life of a GaN charger is longer

Compatibility

But the question a user asks is: is my smartphone, tablet or PC compatible with this standard? We assume that most smartphones are equipped with a mechanism of temperature control. So if we attach a smartphone with a maximum supported power of 18W to a 65W charger, the device will possibly warn us of an imminent danger.

Most GaN chargers integrate the technology USB-C PowerDelivery. This allows us to offer faster recharging for i compatible devices. Most smartphones today support a fast charging standard, and more and more devices will offer this option in the future.

If you already want to buy it, the Xiaomi GaN 65W charger is available at this link on Amazon Italy.
