Xiaomi doesn't stop anymore: the chip ready to make a splash is almost a reality

Xiaomi has made a great step forward in the development of its 3nm smartphone chips, marking a major milestone in the Chinese tech landscape. While the so-called “wafer” is not yet ready for mass production, its design is complete and ready to be manufactured. Let’s see what this means for the future of Xiaomi phones and the global semiconductor market.

Xiaomi Successfully Develops First 3nm Smartphone Chip

Xiaomi is back to making serious moves in the world of smartphone chips with the “tape out” of the first Chinese 3nm SoC (System on Chip). But what does that mean exactly? “Tape-out” marks the point at which a chip design is complete and ready to be sent to fabrication. In simple terms, Xiaomi has finished the design of its chip and now just waits for it to be produced, adding to the already existing Dimensity 9400. While there are no CPU or GPU details yet, we know it will be a 3nm chip, a major technological milestone.

It is not yet clear which manufacturer will be responsible for manufacturing it: it could be a giant like TSMC o Samsung, but the mystery remains. However, the fact that Xiaomi has completed this phase indicates a clear signal of its willingness to seriously compete in the semiconductor field, not only for secondary components such as battery management, but for the very heart of its devices.

Xiaomi

Xiaomi is not new to this type of challenge. Already in 2017, with the Mi 5C launch, the company had introduced its first chip, the Pengpai S1, a 28nm SoC. While it wasn't a huge commercial success, it showed that the company was intent on building in-house semiconductor design capabilities.

Since then, Xiaomi has focused more on specific chips for other functions, such as charging management or image processing, with the series Surge G, P e C. The latest example of this work is visible in the Xiaomi 14 Ultra, that we have already reviewed, which uses chips Surge P2 e G1 to improve charging efficiency and battery life.
