Xiaomi creates a technical committee and pushes on AIoT

Xiaomi has just announced that it wants to create a technical committee composed of 19 members with the task of helping the fourth smartphone manufacturer in the world to become a company guided by artificial intelligence.

Cui Baoqiu, the newly promoted vice president of Xiaomi, will be the chairman of this committee and responsible for technical strategies, collaboration with various governments and universities, will recruit and encourage talent as well as build an "engineering" culture within the company .

Lei Jun

Xiaomi co-founder and general manager, Lei Jun, said during an internal meeting that the most exceptional and off-screen engineers will be rewarded with millions of Yuan (hundreds of thousands of euros).

At the meeting, Lei Jun also said that Xiaomi intends to set up two research and development centers in Nanjing and Wuhan with tens of thousands of researchers and engineers. They will keep company with the existing one in Beijing, the place where the company is based.

Although Xiaomi is increasingly popular in Europe and the rest of the world, the smartphone manufacturer in China has seen an 34% decline in the fourth quarter of the 2018. The technical committee would then come to the rescue following the previous creation of three departments with a focus on artificial intelligence: new AI, big data and cloud computing.

At the same time, Xiaomi had promoted Cui, or rather the one who had created the AI and cloud team within the company, as vice president, who since then has dealt directly with Lei Jun.

In Lei Jun's past we have a degree in computer science from Wuhan University in China followed by a career at Kingsoft as a developer. While Cui Baoqiu worked for IBM in the laboratories of Silicon Valley, Yahoo and Linkedin before joining Xiaomi.

Previously, Xiaomi claimed that it would invest at least 1,5 billion dollars on AI and smart devices in the 5 years to follow. In the 2018 Xiaomi has instead spent 860 million dollars, with an increase in 83% spending compared to the previous year, this due to the more investment in personnel for research and development, creation of new smartphones, AI, internet services and other projects.

Finally, last January Lei Jun said, "Now is the time to act. We focus everything on AIoT ”. AIoT is the fusion between AI, Artificial Intelligence, and IoT, Internet of Things. In practice, Xiaomi wants a world full of interconnected devices driven by artificial intelligence.

... that he would have invested at least 1,5 billion dollars in AI does not mean in an equivalent way every year. So if in 2018 he spent 860 million dollars it does not mean that he increased his spending by 83 percent. Please redo. the calculations within 5 years.
