Xiaomi's cylindrical smartphone with a rollable screen is WOW

Xiaomi it is making great strides in innovation but sometimes it really thinks about solutions poco practices. The last one, which we see today, concerns one cylinder shaped smartphone (yes you got it right) with a truly unique screen opening mechanism. It's about a really impossible to use solution: think of using a smartphone as if it were a big bottle of water. But having said that, let's look at the patent that was brought to us in color by the team of LetsGoDigital.

Xiaomi has thought of a cylinder-shaped smartphone with a screen that stretches, like LG Rollable. And it even has a built-in speaker! But how cool is this?

First some formal data: the patent was filed by Xiaomi at the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) in March 2020. However, the documentation was approved and published only today, May 11, 2021. Although the design immediately reminds us of a smart speaker like the Xiaomi Mi Smart Speaker it becomes clear from the short description that it is one smartphone rollable.

The cylindrical device has a large roll-up display. In its most compact position, the screen sits inside, so it stays well protected. A comfortable one cornice was mounted on the side of the screen, which doubles as a handle for pull out the display as needed. A single button is placed on the top of this Xiaomi rollable smartphone. Presumably this is the on and off button. Furthermore, a system of cameras is visible on the back of the housing.

Unfortunately, the details on this camera are missing. Judging by the lens design, it appears to be one main camera, flash and zoom camera. According to the images Xiaomi provides this smartphone with a large speaker at the bottom. Connections such as a USB-C connector are not visible in the pictures which is why one is assumed wireless charging (from where, no one knows). All nice, but how practical can such a device be?
