Xiaomi is the second manufacturer of wearables in the world, after Apple

A couple of days ago we reported how Xiaomi became the industry leader in wearables in the Indian territory in these last years. Well, today a new report from the market research company IDC let us know that this leadership translates into excellent numbers even at a global level, putting Xiaomi in second place only behind the giant Apple.

Numbers in hand, IDC confirms a wearable market growth in the second quarter of the 2018, with a volume of devices shipped by 27.9 million, or about 5.5% more than the same period last year. The market value of the sector has also increased by 8.3% compared to the previous year, now standing at 4.8 billion dollars, an increase also due to the growing popularity of more expensive devices (Apple Watch?).

From a regional point of view, we noticed a decrease in the profits of 6.3% in the areas that include the United States, Japan and Western Europe, with a market that was mainly based primarily on fitness tracker but now includes more smartwatch in percentage. Meanwhile, in emerging countries in Asia, Central / Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America, there has been a growth of 14%, this time due to the sale of low-cost fitness trackers.

As you can see in the graphs below, there are two companies that currently hold the wearables market: Apple and Xiaomi, which together reach 32.1%. Apple has managed to keep the first position in the sector thanks above all to its Apple Watch with integrated LTE technology, which makes it a device that the phone providers are able to sell with various packages and promotions.

As for Xiaomi, the company has maintained its second position thanks to the introduction of other wearable devices such as shoes, watches for children and different variations of the Mi Band, all at very cheap prices. Growing its brand awareness around Europe and the Middle East thanks to the success of other products such as smartphones, tablets and the multitude of gadgets that we know very well.

At the end of the day, this is not a great achievement for Xiaomi because the company has always been among the world's leading wearable devices manufacturers. That said, given the very upsetting trend in the sector, remaining in second place in this very competitive market is still something positive, especially in view of the launch of the new Mi Band 3 with NFC which will almost certainly sell very well.
