Yesterday, Xiaomi presented the new Mi 10 Ultra flagship. One of the most outstanding features of this device is the 120W fast charging, yes you read that right, more than 100W of power in a smartphone!

But how did Xiaomi get to such a high power? Is all this safe? Well, the brand has just released an official statement explaining how it works and what has been developed to make it safe. Let's go and find out together!

The Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra adopts a new "4: 2" type high power charging architecture. By decomposing the high current into a double low current charge, not only reduces the impedance of the charging path, but also improves the overall conversion efficiency. The two charging paths are equipped with ultra-efficient custom chips to form a parallel dual charge pump architecture.

The two customized charge pumps with a conversion efficiency of up to 98,5% not only increase the conversion rate of the charge, but also greatly improve the stability. In the 120W high power charging process, two 20V 3A high voltage currents are converted into two 10V 6A low voltage currents and finally converge into a 10V 12A high current input battery .

At the same time, to satisfy 120W high-power charging, the Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra uses a brand new double butterfly string battery, specifically the battery is connected in series with two 2250 mAh cells, for a total equivalent to 4500 mAh. The double cell butterfly battery cell structure design in series can double the charging power while maintaining the same charging current.

The newly developed butterfly assembly method requires a smaller protection circuit than traditional side-by-side dual string battery, and achieves greater battery capacity for the same volume. The back of the protection circuit also adds a heat dissipation material to effectively alleviate the temperature rise of the battery during the charging process and extend the life of high power charging.

Secondly, the Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra also adopts many other small details in the battery to meet high-power fast charging needs. For example, the battery cell adopts a low internal resistance tab design, which reduces internal resistance by 36% compared to traditional battery, resulting in less charge loss and faster charging speed. In addition, the temperature during charging can be reduced by as much as 4,8 ° C.

The Mi 10 Ultra also arrives with a new highly conductive graphene-based material on the battery's positive electrode. Conductivity is 1000 times that of traditional materials, which greatly improves battery charging efficiency.

A thicker, lower impedance dual FPC connector is used between the battery and motherboard instead. On the one hand, the double FPC facilitates the sorting of the current and prevents the connector from overheating during charging; on the other hand, since it is thicker and with a lower impedance the custom FPC also effectively reduces energy loss during charging, reduces heat generation and improves charging efficiency.

Finally, the Mi 10 Ultra uses Battery Sense cell voltage monitoring technology and cell balancing algorithm to match a more accurate strategy during the charging process, such as to balance the voltage difference between the double cells and avoid overload. In fact, over-discharging low-voltage batteries can extend their life.

In terms of safety, the smartphone adopts 34 safety protection measures to ensure the safety of charging and has passed the TÜV Rheinland Safe Fast Charging 3.0 certification.

As for battery life, the Mi 10 Ultra uses a “long life” battery. After 800 full charge and discharge cycles, the actual battery capacity is no less than 90%, while standard batteries generally adopt the standard of 60% after 400 cycles.

Recall that in addition to the second 120 W high-power wired charging, the smartphone also supports 50 W wireless charging, to recharge the smartphone to 100% in just 40 minutes.
