As you know today, the presentation of two new smartphones by Xiaomi was held, the much discussed Mi 8 Youth and Mi 8 Screen Fingerprint Edition. And the latter was the first protagonist of the day, which apparently inherited almost everything from Mi 8 Explorer Edition, but offering two new colors very appealing and youthful in addition to the transparent back cover. The prices offered on the market are for the version from 6 + 128 GB equal to 3199 yuan (about 399 euros) while for the 8 GB version of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage we have a price list of 3599 yuan (about 449 euros). Among the main features of course the insertion of the fingerprint sensor under the display, which is improved in the unlocking speed of 29% and in the accuracy of 8,8% compared to Mi 8 EE. In addition, the Snapdragon 845 processor seems to be further optimized for game management thanks to Epic Games' Unreal Engine but compared to Mi 8 Explorer Edition we lose the 3D unlocking offered instead via IR sensor as for standard Mi 8. Do not miss the Dual GPS, and a dual camera from 12 + 12 megapixel with 4-axis OIS stabilized optics and dual pixel autofocus.
But the device that everyone is waiting for is Mi 8 Youth or Mi 8 Lite, the name has not yet been fully understood, which even if it follows the current fashion offers a reduced notch and above all ultra thin frames in comparison with the rivals of the sector. In fact, compared to iPhone XR we find a notch from 19,4 mm compared to the 35,2 mm proposed by the iPhone, so the curvature of the display offer smaller frames and a thickness limited to 7,5 mm, one of the thinnest on the market.
Needless to deny, the colors offered by Mi 8 Youth are definitely beautiful and a real novelty for what has been offered until now on the other terminals of the brand. But in addition to the Xiaomi coloring on Mi 8 Youth has done a painstaking work, returning an ultrareflective gradient that changes depending on how it is affected by light. Stupendous, is not it? The material used is glass with 2.5D processing for improved ergonomics. A curiosity about the colors that Xiaomi wanted to use on Mi 8 Youth: these come as inspiration from Monet's paintings, a master of harmony and the combination of colors.
Xiaomi Mi 8 Youth and Mi 8 Screen Fingerprint Edition: here are the details of the launch event
Moreover, during the presentation event something embarrassing happened but that reveals the reality on both devices just presented. President Lin Bin had to clean smartphones on their pants before showing them to photographers because they were full of footprints. In fact, the glass back is a real magnet for grease and fat in general. Below are short videos showing the play of lights offered by the Mi 8 Youth back cover.
Mi 8 Youth is a smartphone dedicated to photography starting from the most popular one by the young, that is, selfie. In fact, on the front of the smartphone we find 24 megapixel optics with AI technology support. The president also underlines the efforts that the company has made in this area starting from Mi 3 presented in 2013. There is a multi-tone flash (well 4 shades of color temperature) on the front to give sharper and more natural selfies even in low light conditions.
But you are interested in the technical data, right? And so here they are: Mi 8 Youth offers on the rear a dual 12 megapixel camera with f / 1.9 aperture and 1.4um pixel surface equipped with dual PD autofocus accompanied by a second 5 megapixel lens to obtain the blurred effects in the photos. There is also the AI technology able to recognize the scene automatically and therefore set the best shooting parameters. Two new scenes are also added to this mode, such as beach and fish.
The selfie camera instead as already mentioned is equipped with a 24 megapixel optics with Sony IMX576 sensor with pixel surface from 1.8 um and f / 2.2 aperture. Here is a series of sample shots that show us the potential of the photographic sector of this smartphone.
And until the end we hoped that Mi 8 Youth was equipped with the SoC Snapdragon 710 and instead as the rumors had anticipated the terminal will adopt the CPU Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 with a sub-processor dedicated to artificial intelligence to improve its performance for these activities. And the price? Well it will take 1399 yuan (about 145 euros) for the 4 + 64 GB variant, 1699 yuan (about 212 euros) for the 6 + 64 GB one and finally 1999 yuan (about 250 euros) for the top version with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage. The start of sales is set for September 25th.
Finally here is a picture that shows us the whole family Mi 8 that today boasts two new entries.
Before the end of this launch event, 3 new products were introduced such as a new 15,6 inch laptop equipped with Intel i5 processor, NVIDIA MX110 GPU to 2 GB, 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB SSD storage + 1 TB HDD with a price of 4599 yuan equal to about 574 euros. Also from the photos it seems that there is also a new color. In addition to this, the XiaoAI Smart Clock was also presented at the price of 149 yuan, about 19 euros, with sales starting from 28 September. Finally, a new pair of USB Type-C earphones is also presented with a really cheap price of 99 yuan, about 13 euros.
