Xiaomi Mi MIX 4 with UWB technology: here's how it works

After three years of waiting since the last Mi MIX 3, Xiaomi launched the new Mi MIX 4 a couple of weeks ago. The smartphone not only brings a fantastic hidden camera screen, but is also Xiaomi's first device equipped with UWB technology.

But what are the advantages of UWB over traditional Wi-Fi and Bluetooth based positioning methods based on signal strength? And how does it work?

In this regard, the official account of Xiaomi on Weibo (the Chinese Twitter) has communicated further details on the functioning of this new technology.

According to the brand, UWB technology can perform precise 3D positioning of the device in space. When used with Mi TV Master 77 ″ OLED o Mi One Finger Connect, the smartphone can be pointed at the TV and the operation interface will be displayed.

This is possible because Ultra Wideband (Ultra Wideband) is different from other wireless technologies. Its operating frequency range is wider, ie between 6Ghz and 8,5GHz. Furthermore, the signal emitted is an ultra-short pulse of only about 2 nanoseconds.

Its ultrashort pulse characteristics bring three advantages:

The first is the high degree of recognition, since the characteristics are clear, the UWB receiver can recognize the UWB pulses from the noise of the surrounding signals.

This allows the UWB to use lower transmit power, usually 30 dBm less than Wi-Fi signals, and can be hidden in the “background noise” created by other communication technologies, causing almost no interference.

Therefore, the UWB one-finger connection function of the Mi MIX 4 will not affect the normal operation of radio frequencies such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and 5G.

Secondly, thanks to the extremely short pulse, the Mi MIX 4 can quickly determine the distance of the AIoT devices, within a radius of 10 meters, the error is only 20cm, so it can effectively filter the surrounding devices, for example activating only the IoT closest to the device to the user.

Not only that, through the three receiving antennas on the Mi MIX 4, the AIoT devices can be positioned in 3D and the coordinates (longitudinal angle, latitude angle and distance) can be reported for a higher level of precision, so it can be precisely determined. which AIoT device the user is pointing to.
