Aesthetically, the Xiaomi Mi Reader is very thin with a thickness of only 8,3 millimeters and is also light at around 178 grams of weight. While in the design it resembles a common tablet but with thicker edges that we will use to hold it in any case. Moreover, being built in plastic and not metal or glass, the device will not show the fingerprints we see on smartphones instead.

The reader is only available in a version with a frontal frame of white color with the writing Mi Reader at the bottom, on the back we have a dark gray back cover instead. The device also has a power button in the upper part and a USB Type-C port for charging and data transfer in the lower part.

The first Xiaomi eReader adopts an high-definition 6 inch e-ink (electronic ink) screen with a ppi (pixel per inch) ratio of 212. The screen has also received a special anti-reflective treatment that makes it more like paper. There is also the possibility of setting the brightness, specifically we have 24 brightness levels to have a greater choice, moreover the brightness is evenly distributed (up to 94%) for a clearer and more comfortable reading experience in different conditions light.

Xiaomi Mi Reader

The Xiaomi Mi Reader is the first device of this type that uses an AllWinner 300 quad-core processor with an 1,8Ghz clock, coupled with 1GB of RAM (more than enough considered the use) for a boot speed of just one second and a very fluid interface. We then have 16GB of memory to store up to 5 thousand books (calculated on an average of 2MB per book) and a battery of 1800mAh of capacity for several weeks of use with a single charge. The hardware just mentioned runs on an operating system based on Android 8.1

As for the contents, it will be possible to read from electronic books to online works and comics. Users will be able to choose how to access, whether through the Xiaomi account or the WeChat account and instantly synchronize all purchased content. Moreover it is also possible to save books on the cloud of the Chinese platform Baidu (the Chinese Google) and download these contents in the future whether it is books, Office files or other.

The Xiaomi eReader supports book transfer via WiFi. The procedure consists in connecting the Mi Reader to the router, the device will generate a QR code which can then be scanned by the smartphone camera and redirected to the login site. Alternatively you can always use the USB Type-C cable to move all the various files directly from the PC.

The Xiaomi Mi Reader supports the most common text formats like txt, epub pdf and many others. It can also optimize pdf files for better reading. We then find an integrated WPS software for reading Microsoft Office files such as PPT, Excel and Word.

Finally, among the other features we have the automatic rotation of the page, the function marks books, the possibility of adjusting the size and style of the characters, the contrast and much more.

Xiaomi's Mi Reader is now crowdfunding on the official website at the figure of 579 Yuan (75 €), while the market price outside the campaign will be 599 Yuan (77 €). So not incredibly cheap but given the specs it should worry Amazon quite a bit poco (provided that the import price is not exaggerated).
