Xiaomi Mi9: Is the camera really poor?

Yes, I know you're wondering. But the Xiaomi Mi9 camera is it really poor? Some say yes, others say no. What is the truth?

Let's start to mention who is talking about Xiaomi Mi9: DxO Mark.

In this article, DxO does an accurate review of the photographic skills of the Xiaomi Mi9 enhancing its characteristics even in comparison with other sacred monsters like iPhone XSMate 20PRO e Samsung S10 Plus.

The result of the accurate review is very respectable: 107 total points doing the average between the photographic part (112 points) , video part (99 points)

The 112 points for the camera are not bad at all as only 2 points away have the Mate 20 PRO and Galaxy S10 More. THE'iPhone XS it's even behind it!

But then why some say that does the Mi9 camera suck?

Andrea Galeazzi in its review talk about a room that

"makes good photos with lots of light but in the dark the quality goes down a lot".

Niccolò Roli, of HD Blog (I remember with affection for having published, on HD Blog, my first review of the Xiaomi Mi2S) instead uses other terms to describe the photographic qualities of the Xiaomi Mi9:

The Mi9 triple camera "is only good for sharing your holidays on social networks but if we are photographers, let's forget".

Basically ... it's worth it!

Understand that we are facing a blatant contradiction. Let's move on from D that puts the Mi9 on the podium of the 3 best cameras in the world to HD Blog that practically rants him categorically.

I've been trying since Friday night and, faced with so much confusion, I wanted to compare the camera Xiaomi Mi9 with that of the Xiaomi Mi8 that, remember, there are a dozen places lower down in the DxO Mark ranking, but all of them have always taken photographic praises. The choice of Mi8 also serves to understand if indeed the Xiaomi has made the much-debated step forward or worse, come back.

We come to us.

Xiaomi Mi9 VS Xiaomi Mi 8 - Camera

Xiaomi Mi9 - Photos in good light conditions

In the selected detail the Xiaomi Mi9 wins. The colors are more natural and there is less noise. The definition is not superior but it is also true that the photo was taken in STANDARD mode and not 48mpx.

Xiaomi Mi9 - Photos against the sun

Even against the sun the management of light is definitely improved with the Xiaomi Mi9. Even this photo was not taken at 48mpx so the definition is almost identical. But we are still faced with an improvement compared to the previous model.

Xiaomi Mi9 - 48mpx shooting

As you can understand from the MARK of the photo taken with the Mi9 we switched to the 48mpx mode.
Well ... contrary to what you have heard i 48mpx ARE NOT FINISH. The photo gains in definition. Of course, we are not shouting at the miracle but the difference is there and it shows.

Xiaomi Mi9 - Night Shot

Here the first surprise. 🙁
The Mi8, in the night shot was superior. The selected detail is definitely more mixed in the image taken by the Mi9. A case? Let's try again.

Even here, even if in a less evident way the Xiaomi Mi8 wins for light management.

Conclusions

The Xiaomi Mi9 has made progress yes, but also back. Like the good Galeazzi I noticed very good performance in excellent and fair light conditions but at night, unfortunately we are even behind the Xiaomi Mi8.

But there is a lance to be broken in favor of Xiaomi.
The Mi9 is the first smartphone in the house to adopt this 3-camera solution and REAL 48mpx.
Xiaomi has accustomed us to release updates that significantly improve camera performance during construction so I trust that in a very short time the problems related to night shots will be settled and that we will see even further increase the already very high quality of the shots in good light conditions.

What do you think about it? Disappointed by the photographic performance of the Xiaomi Mi9 or will you trust Xiaomi?

Write it here in the comments.

very disappointed, and now I doubt heavily about DxoMark. I thought it was, if not at the top, such that it could be chosen lightly even for the camera. Instead of the more expensive tops there are substantial differences, both with respect to Samsung and Huawei. But shouldn't it improve on Xiaomi cameras?

48 MPixel… but come on… if you want high-performance cameras take a reflex or a mirrorless… what do you expect from lenses that are almost invisible and from very small sensors ???
As far as I've tried, the Mi 9 takes photos that are 'almost' comparable with those of my old Leica TZ5, without having that zoom however, and in any case 'almost' comparable, the optics of the Mi9, although fixed, I repeat, are too small to ensure excellent image quality.

I confirm. In 48 mpx mode, photos in barely low light are pitiful. Noise at stratospheric levels and enlarging the image it seems that the photos are made with sand

Pictures are much more noisy than on this test. I am upset because I did not know the megapixels size does not prove the picture will be good. My S8 did a much better job than my new Mi9. On smartphone screen no problem, but transfer into computer and you see how bad pictures are.

48 noisy megapixels are worse than clean 12.
The difference in resolution is laughable compared to the fact that there are pixels in quadruple quantity.
12 clean megapixels are great for printing even 50X70 and you save memory space.
Surely it will improve but in my opinion the sensors from 12 / 16 are still at the top, not at all enough to see the new S10 and Sony.

Software does the job… in fact with gcam shooting at 12mpx and without intelligence art. photos are better than 48mpx

Happy owner of a Xiaomi mi mix 2s if I have the opportunity I will definitely switch to mi 9 also because the photographic part of the phones interest me relatively and a top of the range at half the price of the others where can you find it otherwise ??? Great Xiaomi

Disappointed with 107 points I thought it was really at the top but I have to change my mind. We'll see if they'll put a hand on the software because I think the optics are excellent.

I don't know if anyone has noticed, but all smartphones have a peculiarity that makes the quality of the photos very 'poor'. In fact, it is in all cases of fixed aperture lenses, i.e. it is not possible to use the mode that probably 90% of SLR owners use and that is the AV mode, which means aperture priority, precisely because the aperture is not there. is. What does this entail? Meanwhile, it is not possible to vary the depth of field, i.e. we will always have photos with poor focus, always having to operate with a diaphragm with maximum aperture, in some... Read the rest »

guys with the gcam (or with future optimizations on the software stock side) how much is the mi9 able to recover in quality (especially at night) compared to the top cameraphone? thank you

Mamma mia has just come out and everyone is already criticizing ... wait for things to be sorted out, they probably let it out prematurely to counteract the sales of the s10 ... if with a software update they inserted after a year on the pocophone or my 8 (I don't remember now ...) will recording in 4k at 60fps be capable, what do you think?

The optical stabilizer for a mobile phone is the basis for a photo.

I think the collapse in the night photos is given by the lack of the optical stabilizer.
Increasing the exposure time the blur goes to the wedding.

Scattered considerations: 1. The terminal tested by dxomark had Chinese roms well calibrated for the test (updates will arrive, perhaps slow but it will arrive at that 107). 2. The OP has the gcam which does half the job. When it is available, just install it on the mi9 and goodbye noise at night. 3. For some shortcomings of selfies and photos at night we cannot discuss a camera with enormous potential for improvement (in 4k it showed the green mice at the s10) and what is even more serious to discuss a top of the range of 450 euros. 4. If you really like it... Read the rest »

I only say that with a redmi 4 pro (oreocustom rom) and appropriate gcam (after days and days of trying versions) I take more beautiful photos than s9 and mate 10 ... this is to say that: the sensor is important ... and I think there is. the software will improve with the updates ... or gcam and go. problem solved

A good terminal I think that only with little light goes into difficulty for the rest beautiful photos.cmq I keep my Mix 2s that takes beautiful photos, and then after installing the version of the g.cam, the front camera shoots very well especially in portrait mode and truly amazing… 😍💣💣💣💣

Hi all I'm using a mi9 China version from 3 GG. I made several photographic comparisons with OP 6T com g cam and with Honor V20. On the night photos I did not find this low quality, but rather a prolonged shooting time. Night mode does a great job. On the mac instead OP with gcam is superior.
Surely the next release will improve the shots a lot. But more than in quality for me will serve in the speed of shooting. These are my personal considerations so nothing professional 🙂

This is the very first Roma. New sensors, etc ... Ok they could work on it well before the release, but we all know "us Xiaomi fans" that they are like this ... They will certainly improve in the weeks to come, and most likely they are already working on it. The rom isn't quite perfect either.
The debate that is felt online, are more than anything else outbreaks created by stressed minors.

I'm sure with the GCam it's a whole other story! We are talking about quality hardware and unfortunately the stock software fails to exploit its potential. I'm about to buy it and would like to know if it was already possible to install a version of the GCam. With the mix3 I use the one compatible with the Pocophone and I can confirm that the leap forward compared to the stock is there. Do you know anything about compatibility with the mi9?

Gcam does not support 48 mpixel, it reaches max at 16, I doubt we'll ever see an implementation.

I use it quietly with an 3 mix and the front camera is from 24mpx..I've had a problem, it just does not make me shoot above the 12mpx. You say that it can be restrictive then the 48mpx?
