Xiaomi tries a big move: here is MiMo, the AI model that challenges OpenAI

Xiaomi presented Mime, an open-source artificial intelligence model designed for logical and mathematical reasoning tasks. Despite its small size, it is already making headlines for having surpassed much larger models in public tests. It is worth remembering that this it is not the first proprietary model of the brand, however, it is the most powerful and above all the first open-source.

Xiaomi MiMo: The AI Model for Reasoning That Challenges ChatGPT

Xiaomi, known to the general public for its smartphones and smart devices, has decided to raise the bar with something that goes far beyond its usual field of action: Mime, his first open source AI model focused on reasoning.

According to the presentation post on WeChat, MiMo has 7 billion parameters, yet it managed to surpass much larger models such as theo1-mini by OpenAI and Qwen-32B-Preview by Alibaba in important public benchmarks such as AIME24-25 for mathematical reasoning and LiveCodeBench v5 for code generation.

Xiaomi Mimo reasoning model scores on the most important benchmarks

Xiaomi has confirmed that MiMo's focus is on tasks that require logical and mathematical inferences. In other words: it is not a general conversational chatbot, but a “brain” designed for specific tasks, which can potentially be very useful in business environments where efficiency, precision and low costs count. And these are the characteristics that make it interesting for edge computing: where hardware is limited, small but tough models are needed.

All the technical documentation and the model itself have been released on GitHub e hugging Face, marking a clear opening towards the community open-source.

There is another dynamic to keep an eye on: the specialization. While many are chasing after increasingly larger and more expensive generalist models, a part of the sector is turning towards specific models, built to do a few things but do them very well. And this is where MiMo plays its trump card: only 7 billion parameters, but a precise focus on mathematical reasoning and code generation.
