The interior of the Xiaomi car prototype has been revealed: large screen and lots of electronics

In any case, the Xiaomi car image displayed this time is once again a camouflaged prototype. The car is a midsize fastback sedan, which is basically the same as the road test models previously exposed.

Some Chinese users have speculated that the super long front end may mean that the Xiaomi car gives way to the internal combustion engine, so it will use a variety of power modes, pure electric, plug-in hybrid and extended range are all possible.

While judging from the vehicle interior images that have been exhibited together, the Xiaomi car is likely to feature a large central control screen.

In addition, there is a lidar interface on the roof of the test vehicle, so the design of Xiaomi's lidar system will be similar to that of the Chinese car Li L9, both of which have a “watchtower style” layout.

For those who missed it, last month Detailed images have been circulating online of the exterior of Xiaomi's first car. Judging from the pictures, the front of Xiaomi's new car adopts a trapezoidal front grille, and the fog light areas on both sides are also designed in a shape similar to the air deflection groove, and the shape of the headlights is relatively round.

In those days, photos of parts produced by BAIC Molding were also leaked, which supplied welding air ducts for cars, side air duct decorative covers, rear bumper lower moldings, lower air intake grilles and more for Xiaomi.

Subsequently, Wang Hua, general manager of Xiaomi's public relations, replied that this group of images was a leaked design document that should be kept secret from a second-tier supplier.

In addition, Xiaomi imposed a fine of 1 million yuan on the supplier, asking it to strengthen the information security management of downstream suppliers and deal with leakers. Xiaomi could also redesign and adjust details such as the front and rear bumpers.

Now, a very important factor in Xiaomi's car production is: where does the title of car manufacturer come from? Recently, Xiaomi has been rumored to qualify for production through the acquisition of Borgward Automobile; there is also news that special approval has been given to forcibly cancel Borgward's qualification to Xiaomi.

There are generally three ways for new Chinese brands to obtain vehicle manufacturing qualifications: OEM, acquisition and independent application.

For example, Weilai found Jianghuai as an OEM, and Xiaopeng also found Haima Automobile as an OEM; Xiaopeng later acquired Guangdong Foday Automobile and obtained production qualifications, and ideally obtained production qualifications after acquiring Lifan; Nezha Automobile has an independent application.

Recently, bloggers broke the news that Chinese production qualifications can no longer be sold and can only be cancelled.

But what is certain is that Xiaomi's car factory project has started construction in Beijing's Yizhuang Economic Development Zone. There are two phases in total, with a production capacity of 150.000 vehicles. The first phase of the factory started construction in April 2021 and is expected to be completed in June this year.

Regarding the news of Borgward Automobile's obtaining production qualification, Xiaomi executives said they would not comment. But while the factory is nearing completion, Xiaomi's car production has also come to a head.

First of all, in terms of intelligence, Xiaomi acquired DeepMotion, an autonomous driving company, to help Xiaomi develop autonomous driving technology.

In 2021, Xiaomi successively invested in Zongmu Technology, Hesai Technology, which went public not long ago, and acquired a stake in Shanghai Geometry Partners, a smart car supply chain company.

Xiaomi has also invested in AIPARK, an intelligent interoperability company, to introduce city-level smart parking solutions.

For semiconductors and chips, Xiaomi invested in Rongpai Semiconductor, a high-performance analog integrated circuit, and Hongyixin, a chip developer for automotive electronics, last year. Recently, Xiaomi also participated in the Angel+ funding round for the development of Huixi Smart automotive chips.

Xiaomi's investment also involves power batteries, such as Ganfeng Lithium Industry, the domestic lithium industry leader, Weilan New Energy, a “lithium battery unicorn”; Honeycomb Energy, which is already preparing for an IPO; and Farnlight, a battery materials company.

It can be said that Xiaomi has seriously defined all aspects of car manufacturing.

Finally, we note that at the recent Xiaomi Investor Day, Lei Jun said that Xiaomi invested more than 3 billion yuan in new businesses such as Xiaomi cars last year, and the existing R&D team has more than 2.300 people. Xiaomi will enter the first echelon of the autonomous driving industry in 2024. In 20 years, Xiaomi will be among the top five manufacturers in the world.
