Xiaomi Redmi Pro: Complete Review

Today we offer you our review of one of the latest and most interesting Xiaomi Phablets, the Redmi Pro in the 32 Gb version of ROM. We thank Honorbuy.it for giving us the phone to be tested.

PACKAGING (7)

The packaging, as usual, is quite sparse. In fact, we only have the 2A 5V power supply with Chinese / American socket (it will therefore need an adapter), the USB Type C - USB cable and the paper clip to open the door for housing the 2 sims (micro + nano) which can also be used to insert a microSD memory expansion (in this case micro sim + microSD). There are no earphones.

CONSTRUCTION AND APPEARANCE (9)

As soon as we remove the phone from the pack, we immediately notice the extreme care that has been achieved. We are talking about a brushed metal unibody body enriched with smooth edges and polished with a 3 glass gorilla glass that gives a premium feeling that few phones have given me.

At the front we have the home physical key, even with touch functions, which incorporates the biometric fingerprint sensor (virtually perfect in recognition), RGB notification LED, headset cap, proximity / brightness sensor and selfie camera .

At the top we find the audio jack from 3.5mm, the IR transmitter and the second Noise suppression microphone.

At the back we find the microphone (sx grid), the speaker (dx grid), the dual camera and the led flash (dual tone).

On the dx side there is the sim box, while on the left there is the volume bar and immediately below the power-on / off / lock-release button.

Despite the large display, the phone is compact and comfortable to use thanks to an excellent optimization of the aspect ratio. If you are "manic" with your phones, however, I recommend you buy a protective cover immediately, as the metal back looks very delicate. Even using as much attention as possible, micro scratches can be seen against the light.

PROCESSOR, OPERATING SYSTEM, AUTONOMY

Processor (8)

The Redmi Pro CPUs are provided by MediaTek, the Helio X20 Deca-Core clocked at 2.1 GHz for the 32 Gb ROM model (eMMC 5.1) and the X25 Deca-Core clocked at 2.5 GHz for the 64 and 128 Gb. 3 Gb of RAM (LPDDR 3) are present on the 32 and 64Gb models, 4 Gb on the 128Gb model. The GPU is the Mali T880. Absent the NFC module. CPU and GPU work well guaranteeing good results even with games that require a lot of graphics effort, such as Real Racing 3, and we have not encountered problems of lost frames with maximum details. The model we tested is 32Gb with Helio X20. Below are the average values obtained on Antutu and Geekbench.

Operating System (9)

The operating system is Android 6 Marshmallow customized by the owner of Xiaomi, the now famous MIUI, to the 8 version. Absolutely fluid the system that does not show improvisations or lags of sorts. Sometimes, however, blocks that denotes a still not perfect development of the ROM that is the 6.9.22 China Developer are highlighted.

Since the phone will arrive with Rom China, therefore only with Chinese / English languages and without google services, it will be necessary to immediately install the Google Playstore and via "local more" the country Italy to have the applications in Italian. The procedure is very simple, it does not require any particular IT skills.

Very well multitasking, applications are kept open in the background without any kind of recharge (enabling the "developer" mode to set different parameters).

The use of the system browser, despite having interesting features, is difficult to configure, as it is full of links to applications to Chinese sites. No problem as Android provides great alternatives such as Chrome, Opera and many more.

There are a lot of themes in the dedicated store that will allow us to change face to our phone whenever we want. Personalization is really at very high levels, in fact we can also set the time to turn on and off our Redmi.

Among the endless MIUI8 settings I want to mention the "Dual apps"  and the "second space". The first will allow us to have a copy of all applications that require setting up an account (Facebook, Messenger, Whatsapp, Telegram, Instagram, Twitter, etc.) so you can use different 2 accounts simultaneously (HERE the focus on this feature). The second gives us the ability to create a sort of partition that you can use exactly like another phone, so other accounts / applications / etc.

Android 6 and MIUI8 allow you to manage the permissions of each installed application, it is therefore important to be careful to give those that are needed above all to google services (given all the required permissions) otherwise you risk blocks and malfunctions.

Autonomy (9.5)

The same discourse for energy saving authorizations (HERE the in-depth analysis for MIUI8 devices), which if set correctly will allow you to increase discretely the already excellent autonomy of the phone.

In fact, the battery of the Redmi Pro is 4100 mAh and will guarantee you excellent autonomy. In my tests, carried out with H3G operator in LTE-WCDMA mode, it proved to be the best smartphone I've ever had: covered the 16 hours of standby with 6h average display on (mixed data / Wi-Fi). Good charging times which are about 2 hours.

Display (9)

The display is a beautiful 2.5 "diagonal 5.5D FullHD OLED, protected by a Gorilla Glass 3 glass. The slight curvature that we find on the sides makes the use of the whole display really perfect, even at the edges where with a normal glass" flat "we would find it difficult to use. I was really impressed with this 2.5D. The brightness is very high, good visibility under the sun. The automatic adjustment did not convince me because, despite being quick in evaluating the variation of ambient light, the lowering or raising of the brightness is too sudden and evident. The color tone can be set in 3 modes: automatic, standard and increased. Personally I prefer the "augmented" mode which makes the display more saturated. Obviously this is a matter of taste, but if we have an amoled display let's exploit it in its strengths! The excellent viewing angles and very deep blacks make this panel an important plus for lovers of this technology.

Network (8)

As far as the radio part is concerned, we find a LTE category of 6 (up to 300mbps in download and 50mbps in upload) but does not support 20 (800 Mhz) bandwidth, so there will be problems for Wind users in 4G. Of course there is also WCDMA / GSM connection, Bluetooth 4.2 and Wi-Fi a / b / g / n (no 5 Ghz frequency supported).

No problem detected in connection with different router and Wi-Fi extender, despite the absence of the 5 GHz band, the signal is strong and I did not encounter any disconnection issues. Same speech for Bluetooth tested with headphones, speakers and car.

The telephone signal on the levels of the top range of Xiaomi the Mi5 is good, although I must point out that sometimes I had disconnections in the call when I was at the minimum field limit, which practically never happened with the Mi5. I think it's due to a less than perfect 2 / 3g switch. The transition from roaming to main operator is fairly fast.

Audio Quality (9)

Here too the terminal has pleasantly affected us. Great system speaker that returns a very high volume and a full-bodied sound, far superior to the average. If you use your phone to listen to headphone music, this is the device that's right for you. Consequently very good hands-free calling.

Also the earphone capsule with which we will not have trouble understanding the interlocutor even in crowded and noisy places.

Camera (8.5)

In this sector we have the real novelty of this Phablet or a double rear photo sensor. The main camera is a 258 Mpx Sony IMX13 with focal aperture f / 2.0, AF pdaf. The secondary, 5 Mpx, captures information on the depth of field in order to allow, in post production, the variation of the focal aperture of the shutter and therefore the focus of the subject. To enable this function we will have to select the "stereo" mode; in this way we will have the possibility to set the focal aperture from a minimum of 1 to a maximum of 6 so as to be able to focus only on the main subject or even the background. We can also decide to focus only on the background. In the event that the result is not to our liking, we can then select the photo in question from the gallery and modify the focus parameters, varying the focal length again or even changing the focus points. Here, however, we have to point out a very annoying thing that is when we go to select the photo to be edited, it is not "ready" but still needs to be processed (maybe it takes even 10 seconds).

Poor "manual" mode that allows us to only change the white balance and the iso.

Interestingly, the "scene" mode allows us to choose a set of presets based on the subject / scenario that we are photographing (portrait, landscape, sports, night, night portrait, beach, snow, sunset, firework). There are also the usual filters to change the shade colors.

All in all you get very nice day photos with natural light, but quite noisy at night.

The potential of this cam seems really great but in my opinion the camera software is dreary; sometimes in "stereo" mode, the fire does not work properly, as sometimes you can not focus on a landscape. It also happens to apply filters that look okay in preview, but once we click it, we realize that they have not been applied.

As for video, we have the possibility to record with a Full HD definition to 30 fps. Also present the options of "time lapse" and "slow motion". In the videos, the absence of the optical stabilizer is felt and compromises the quality of the final result. With an optical stabilization would certainly increase the quality of the video and even the photos in difficult light conditions, quality that is certainly good and absolutely improved with upcoming software updates. Following are two demo videos shot in fairly difficult light conditions because of strong sunlight and shadows.

Good selfie cam from 5 Mpx, no problem taking pictures for our social networks.

The final grade counts half a point more for variable focus options. Better to re-evaluate in a couple of firmware updates.

For the camera we have made a detailed review that you can find TO THIS LINK.

PROJECTED IMPACT

Although the policy of a thousand different models is not my favorite, I must say that with this Redmi Pro Xiaomi has hit the mark. For example, placed next to the more famous P9 Plus it is more compact and aesthetically refined. There are some software problems (of youth) but knowing the attention to development that the Xiaomi team gives to its products, I am convinced that between a couple of realese "stable" this will be a best buy. After two weeks of intense use I can confirm the quality of this terminal and I definitely recommend the purchase. You can find it on the site honorbuy.it (where you can use the discount code XT5OFF) at the incredible price of 263 €. We remind you that honorbuy ships from Italy in 48h and gives you 2 years warranty on the product (repairs in Italy).
