AnTuTu: Here are the hottest specs on our smartphones

Popular benchmarking platform AnTuTu has just released the user preference list for Q2020 XNUMX. This list is based on data collected in the background while using the app. So let's find out what specifications we find on most smartphones on the market.

Screen size: 6 inches or more become mainstream

The sizes of 6,4, 6,5, 6,6 and 6,7 inches have become the main screen sizes of our devices, with the total of four accounting for 69,2% of the market. There is no doubt that the screen size is basically over 6 inches. This is also because smartphones under 6 inches are almost non-existent.

Screen resolution: 1080P

As we can guess from the image, the resolution of 1080P is still the one mainly used. No matter how big the screen is, Full HD resolution is still the best, the most suitable and with the best performance / battery consumption ratio. Furthermore, the arrival of 5G with its high energy consumption compared to 4G, has led several brands to keep screens with 1080p resolution.

Processor brand: Hisilicon Kirin breakthrough

In terms of processor brands, in Q2020 63,7 AnTuTu users with Qualcomm processors accounted for 25,7%, Huawei HiSilicon 8,6%, MediaTek 1,1% and 1,6% Samsung. Compared to the second quarter share, with the exception of MediaTek, in addition to the increase of XNUMX% and Samsung which remained unchanged, Qualcomm and HiSilicon both decreased to varying degrees.

Qualcomm is one of the most consistent brands in the Android processor market, their SoCs have seen consistent growth and, apart from a few cases, have never had any stability issues. Another brand that has recently seen a breakthrough in its CPU technology is Huawei HiSilicon which has just made a breakthrough with the Mate 40 series which adopts a HiSilicon Kirin 9000 with 5nm manufacturing process. Although, due to the dispute with the US government, these processors will be the latest products from the company.

We then have MediaTek which is growing strongly and which for the Huawei problems mentioned above is fast becoming a real alternative to Qualcomm. In fact, several Huawei smartphones already adopt the Taiwanese chipmaker's SoCs. MediaTek also presented the Dimensity 5G series which is proving to be one of the best on the market as regards the specific price ratio.

Number of CPU cores: when more than eight cores?

In the third quarter of 2020, the utilization rate of octa-core processors in smartphones tested on AnTuTu reached 97,5%, an increase of 0,1% compared to the second quarter.

There is honestly not much to add. The octa-core CPUs are the most used, both for their performance and for their reduced consumption if optimized correctly. Quad-cores are practically unavailable even on entry-level smartphones. While 10-core ones are still a long way from going mainstream.

RAM: 8GB models continue to grow

From the graph we see that the percentage of users using models with 8GB of RAM in the third quarter increased to 49,2%, an increase of 0,7% compared to the first quarter. Although it was an increase of less than 1%, it is still a step forward.

In the current mobile phone market, in addition to smartphones on € 150 with "only" 6GB of RAM to lower the starting price, all medium-high range models have already started to adopt 8GB of RAM.

ROM: Never buy a 64GB cell phone

In the 5G era, internet speeds are faster than ever, allowing us to download content in the blink of an eye, we have cameras with 100MP resolutions, we can shoot 8K videos, smartphone games are getting heavier. All this seems to have led users to avoid buying smartphones with 64GB of internal memory.

As we see in the graph, smartphones with 64GB of memory represent only 14.7% of the market, while those with 128GB are already at 54.9%. Then there are those who can afford a device with 256GB, which represent 23.7% and finally the power user who can not go on without 512GB with 3.6% of the market.

Android version: stable progress of Android 10

Finally, AnTuTu shows us that Android 10 is present on the majority of smartphones, reaching 69,2%, with an increase of 1,5% compared to the previous quarter. Compared to the previous quarter's growth rate of 20 +%, the latter is obviously much lower. While the presence of Android 9 has decreased by 1,7% and represents only 22%. So it seems pretty obvious that most of those who ditched Android 9 have moved on to Android 10.
