Despite the pandemic of the new coronavirus (Covid-19) hindering the technology market, the sector has undergone a rapid recovery in the second half of the year 2020. Undoubtedly, situations such as distance learning and smart working have pushed, the fact is that the numbers of the major technology producers are quite thriving, with results often significantly higher than planned.
But today we focus on a report published by the research firm Counterpoint, which shows that in the third quarter of 2020 more than 100 million smartphones were sold, an impressive number, where for the first time in history, MediaTek stands out as CPU supplier than rival Qualcomm. At the moment, the Taiwanese company holds a 31% market share compared to Qualcomm which appears in second place with a 29% share.

MediaTek surpasses Qualcomm: topping the global sales ranking of processor sales
The data shows that MediaTek is managing to grow in the midst of the crisis, which has placed the company in an unprecedented first place in the processor market. The rest of the ranking sees Samsung, HiSilicon and Apple, tied with a market share of 12%.
According to analysts at Counterpoint, what has made MediaTek grow is the increase in sales of low-cost cell phones, with prices between 100 and 250 dollars, in markets such as Latin America and the Middle East, but a good part of the success also comes from the bet of the Dimensity line, which is increasingly performing compared to a past where MediaTek brand CPUs were indicated as poor quality and unresponsive.
Oddly enough, if we instead enter the 5G parameter, Qualcomm is the one holding the stage, with a good 40% market share of processors with this technology. This result is probably also due to the fact that in many global areas 5G still has prohibitive costs and is little exploited by local infrastructures, but at the same time with the expansion of the technology and therefore increasingly within the reach of the user, MediaTek could overturn the result of dominance in this field too.
