Play Store, goodbye APK: from August only Android App Bundle

Google told developers that Android AppBundle will become the mandatory format starting in August, for all new apps. So goodbye to APK, format used since the birth of the operating system. Here are all the details.

Farewell to APK: all the info

APK had several problems: the resources with different versions for different devices, the size that can grow excessively and therefore slow down the download and installation. In short, in the end, the choice of Mountain View was to opt for the Android App Bundle.

The latter are packages optimized for certain devices, up to 15% smaller in size. Any additional features are installed "on demand" via Play Feature Delivery, while for apps larger than 150 MB (such as games, for example) the Play Assat Delivery feature is used. This unloads the associated resources.

In conclusion, all the new apps that will be released from the month of August will have to adapt to the AAP format. Instead, nothing will change for those already on the Play Store. The developer can still use third-party app stores, but only by creating an APK package. Obviously, Google's goal is to ensure the security of its digital store, also because the AAB format will only be available on the Play Store.
