Amazon: new projects also in Italy for wind and solar energy

A multinational like Amazon which has thousands of warehouses and factories behind it, does not pollute poco. But we know that at the top of the pyramid there is Bezos, philanthropist who cares about the health of our planet. A bit like Bill Gates and many other tech moguls. With yesterday's announcement, the world's largest e-commerce said that the supply of renewable energy increases to 40% in one year. Let's see the details.

Amazon does a lot for the planet and announces nearly 300 renewable energy projects in Italy too: specifically solar and wind

Amazon is expanding its renewable energy portfolio by announcing 18 new projects which include large-scale use of wind and solar energy in the United States, Finland, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom. Taken together, these represent 2 gigawatts (GW) of clean energy. Along with the projects announced earlier this year, Amazon will add 5.6 GW of new renewable energy capacity in 2021. The long-term project is to reach 100% renewable energy use by 2025.

This is a really ambitious goal given that the original goal is to reach 100% by 2030. But evidently Amazon (or rather Bezos) from space has seen that the situation is not so rosy. According to disclosed data, the 5.6 GW of electricity generation capacity achieved in 2021 represent a 40% increase compared to the 4 GW acquired in 2020.

In total, Amazon announced 274 projects of renewable energy around the world, including 105 large-scale wind and solar projects and 169 solar roofs on facilities and stores around the world. This has made the giant the largest buyer of renewable energy in the world. Miranda Ballentine, CEO of Clean Energy Buyers Association (CEBA) said:

Large-scale clean energy investments like these benefit us all and should be the new normal for industries of all shapes and sizes. They bring green, high-paying jobs to local communities and support our community's progress toward a 90% carbon-free U.S. electricity system

For the first time, Amazon also takes into account carbon emissions which it will avoid through its growing renewable energy portfolio. Once all 274 clean energy projects are up and running, Amazon estimates that eitherOver 13.7 million tonnes of carbon emissions will be avoided every year.

But what will Amazon do in Italy?

Amazon's solar project in Italy it is the third of the company in our country. This plans to add 40 MW of green energy production to the already existing 66 MW. A total of 104 MW of clean energy with which to move the giant of distribution. In total, Amazon is backing more than 3.5 GW of renewable energy in Europe across 34 projects, making it the largest renewable energy buyer in Europe.

But it's not just about manufacturing consumer goods, because yes, Amazon does that too. A large part of emissions and pollution comes from distribution and therefore from deliveries parcels (to put it in pennies terms). And what will the company do in this regard?

Shipment Zero: to make all Amazon shipments carbon-neutral, the giant "promised" the purchase of 100.000 electric vehicles for delivery by 2030. This is the largest order for electric vehicles ever. In addition, Amazon has promised to invest $ 2 billion in the development of services and solutions decarbonization through Climate Pledge Fund.
