How does the Xiaomi Mi Band work?

As you will surely know, the Xiaomi Mi Band and its subsequent variants have been among the wearable ones that have been most successful not only in China, where they are marketed officially, but also around the world. Their unbeatable price quality ratio has contributed greatly to achieving this result. But how do they work in practice? That is, how do you monitor your pace, sleep, and heart rate? Let's try to find out.

Xiaomi Mi Band and tracking the steps

Within the Xiaomi Mi band there is a special 3 axle accelerometer capable of recording every bit movement of the band. By recording the force of movement, along with the direction and angle and then transferring it to a software capable of processing such data, it can count the movements of the arm we make at each step, as if it were a pendulum (in fact not counts the steps but the arm movements associated with them).

Unfortunately, monitoring is not always accurate, since if we carry a similar arm movement when we walk, the Xiaomi Mi band will also record a step.

Xiaomi Mi Band and sleep monitoring

In this case the sensors involved are two: the proximity sensor and the actigraphy sensor. Exactly as happens with step monitoring, the Xiaomi Mi band uses our wrist to record all its movements and, again through specific software, process the data transforming them into numbers and graphics.

The proximity sensor is used to verify that the Xiaomi Mi band is actually on the wrist. In fact, with other fitness trackers it can happen that while you place them on a table, they begin to monitor your sleep. Thanks to this sensor, however, Xiaomi's wearable can understand if it is in contact with the skin or not.

In this case, the operation of the hardware compartment for heart rate monitoring is the same as all other fitness trackers. By using pulsed light (hence the name Mi Band Pulse) of its LEDs located at the bottom, you can monitor oxygenation and oxygenation of the blood.

Based on the degree of absorption of infrared rays, the band can understand how many times the heart pumps blood. Obviously the final result may depend on various factors, such as the positioning of the wearable (it is not recommended to put it too attached to the wrist) or the sudden changes in heartbeats.
