Microchip, GlobalFoundries Helps During Demand Boom: $ 1.4 Billion Investment

I microchip. We hear about them all the time but do we really know their importance? In a nutshell, let's try to explain it ourselves. I'm at the base of every electronic device, and this should already be enough. If we add to this the fact that telephony companies, but not only, continue to churn out products after products, we immediately understand how the die-off of microprocessors is getting bigger and bigger. The manufacturing giants like TSMC e Global Foudries however they are running for cover. Let's see how the latter has decided to move.

GlobalFoundries, one of the world's largest microchip manufacturing companies, has allocated $ 1.4 billion to meet growing demand

According to a recent report by Reuters, GlobalFoundries, a microchip manufacturer, would be investing 1.4 billion dollars to expand production. This was announced citing a statement from the executive director of the company. According to him, this amount will be distributed evenly between factories in the United States, Singapore and Germany.

"The adoption of the technology that would normally have taken a decade occurred in one year in 2020 due to COVID-19"

Thomas Caulfield, CEO of GlobalFoundries

GlobalFoundries expansion is driven by the current shortage of microcircuits, which arose as a result of rapid growth in demand. Investments will increase the volume of production of microchips from 12 to 90 nm. The production volume is expected to increase by 13% this year and by another 2022% in 20. About a third of the investment will come from customers looking to secure a stable source of supply.

If the demand continues to grow, GlobalFoundries could build a new facility alongside the existing one in New York State. The agreement for the purchase of the plot of land was concluded last year.

Caufield himself admits that it is not a question of "if" but a question of "when". However, the decision does not depend exclusively on the company but also on the so-called chips act, that is an investment that provides tens of billions of dollars for microprocessor manufacturing in the United States.
