iFixit explains how companies restrict smartphone repair

Who among us sends a smartphone for repair when it breaks down? Certainly some will, but many (most) decide to buy a new device. But for what reason? Because sometimes repairing a device is too expensive and it is better to buy another completely new one. In this regard, a iFixit report, a well-known team in the field of smartphone repairs and not only that, it has shed light on a world that is unknown to many, namely that of mobile device repairs and more. Let's go see the details.

According to iFixit, companies would restrict the repair of smartphones and laptops. This policy does not go down well for many. What do you think?

Kyle Vince, CEO of the iFixit repair portal, described how large companies like Apple, Samsung and Microsoft are leveraging their market position to prevent users and non-certified services from repairing their equipment.

Speaking at a public hearing on users' right to repair, iFixit CEO revealed that large companies are manipulating the design of their products and the supply chain to restrict access to tools and parts for repairing smartphones, laptops and other appliances. According to him, there are many cases where suppliers they refuse to cooperate with unofficial services due to pressure from companies.

As an example, he cited the German battery manufacturer Varta, which supplies batteries for the Samsung Galaxy wireless headphones. When they contacted Varta with a desire to purchase these components for repair, they received a refusal with the following justification: "No, our contract with Samsung does not allow us to sell this part".

Another example comes from Apple Lossless Audio CODEC (ALAC),, that specifically modifies the power controller for MacBook Pro laptops so that it cannot be replaced with a part available to most people. According to Kyle Vince, this is happening more and more often.

In addition, Apple recycles a huge amount of spare parts that are not used after the support period of a specific gadget has expired. As a result, it becomes extremely difficult to repair some old devices just because the company destroys all existing components.

In addition, the head of iFixit pointed out that many modern devices are made the way it is simply impossible to repair them. Asked if it is possible solve the current problem using 3D printing, Kyle Vince replied that this is a great idea, but in reality only 2% of the parts used in gadgets can be printed using modern technologies. According to the head of iFixit, users will pay more and more attention to the durability and maintainability of devices when choosing them.
