A revolutionary project is about to change the landscape of artificial intelligence in Italy. Genius, in collaboration with the Cineca consortium, announces "Italian model“, a significant innovation in the field of generative AI. This initiative will guarantee, according to Italian scholars, a language model precise and respectful of Italian culture, differentiating itself from the technological giants of other countries and opening new horizons for the Italian language and culture.
Italy model by iGenius: an Italian generative model that will make ChatGPT pale
iGenius, an already established name in the field of artificial intelligence, collaborates with Cineca (a non-profit inter-university consortium made up of 118 public bodies including 2 ministries and 70 Italian universities) to launch “Italian model“, a project that marks a turning point in the generative AI sector. Founded in 2016, iGenius has already demonstrated its commitment toinnovation and AI technology. Their latest venture aims to create a GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) which not only respects but also celebrates the Italian language and culture, presenting itself as aalternative to the dominant models of the United States and China.
Ulyan Sharka, CEO of iGenius, revealed that the training of “Italian model" is based on “trillions of tokens” collected from authentically Italian sources, including Wikipedia. This approach ensures that the model is deeply rooted in the Italian language and culture, while being able to operate in multiple languages. Unlike models developed by giants like OpenAI and Google, “Model Italia” aims to reduce cultural biases (i.e. prejudices), offering a more authentic and respectful experience of Italian cultural identity.
A fundamental aspect of the project “Italian model” by iGenius is his emphasis on safety and accuracy. Sharka reminds that they cannot afford mistakes, especially in critical sectors such as finance, healthcare and national security. Their ambition is to achieve 100% accuracy, a goal that, if achieved, could completely change the field of generative AI.
The challenge that iGenius and Cineca face is significant. Many previous Italian attempts to replicate the success of international tech giants have been unsuccessful. However, iGenius is optimistic. With Cineca's public supercomputing infrastructure and compliance with the principles of the European AI Act, “Italian model” could be the catalyst for a radical change in the AI sector in Italy and beyond.
