The digital driving license in the IO App: characteristics and timing
This innovation is made possible by the integration with the public IO application, which as we said becomes a real digital wallet thanks to IT Wallet. This system will allow you to store not only your driving licence, but also other important documents such as your health card and your disability certificate, all accessible via a practical QR queues.
The digital driving licence, initially announced for 2023, has undergone a delay in timing. Despite this, the project has not lost momentum: the launch of the IT Wallet is scheduled for the first half of 2024, with the aim of making the license consultable and valid throughout Europe directly from the smartphone. The decision not to digitize the voter card demonstrates a strategic choice aimed at focusing on documents with a higher immediate impact for citizens.
The functionality of the digital driving license follows the virtuous example (although not widely shared) of the Green Pass, offering a simple and efficient way to view documents. Through the IO app, it will be possible to access the driving license data, including personal details and points balance, thus guaranteeing constant control and greater ease of management.
The advantage of this innovation is not only technological but extends to personal safety. The digital driving licence reduces the risk of loss, theft or counterfeiting, while offering a notification system for document expiration and renewal. This aspect represents an important step forward in maintaining legality and road safety.
At European level, the introduction of the digital driving license is part of a broader context of road safety measures, among which the proposal to make driving license withdrawal effective in all EU member countries. This initiative aims to combat impunity for serious road traffic offences, extending the consequences of such actions throughout the Union.
But when will the digital driving license be available? It is expected to be available later June 2024.
