Here's how omni-directional wireless charging takes it one step further

The last months of 2021 have been a concentrate of discoveries and innovations in the field of recharge wireless. Smartphones and other devices have already integrated it for some time, yet companies are pushing to make it more powerful and then faster. However, some researchers also focus on how this happens: specifically, they want to improve directionality wireless charging. A new discovery ofAalto University allows this wireless charging to evolve, in a certain way.

A new application of coils that carry energy makes omnidirectional wireless charging evolve: the news from the University of Aalto

The main challenge in creating a omnidirectional charger is that the strength of the charging field changes with the position. This means that the devices charge so poco efficient if they are in the wrong place or not oriented correctly. There are several ways to solve this problem: il first, plans to create a charge field using several transmitter coils connected to different power sources, but this complicates the story; il according to, provides feedback to correctly orient the wireless charging range, but the control systems are also complicated and expensive.

Aalto University researchers developed a new system that solves the problem of costs and efficiency. The key to the new wireless charging device is a cylindrical power coil. The wire at the top of the coil is wound in the opposite direction to the wire at the bottom, with a Z-shaped connection between the two. As current flows through these windings in opposite directions, produce complementary magnetic fields.

This results in a uniform magnetic field around the center of the charge coil. Receivers placed anywhere within that area they load efficientlyand regardless of their location or orientation. Based on simulations of the electromagnetic field around a device, the researchers found that the level of exposure was complies with the requirements of safety standards. However, more safety studies will be needed before the technology can be used.
