Samsung designs the 600MP sensor, but here's how long we'll have to wait

Samsung released the first 108-megapixel mobile camera sensor in 2019. Last week, the company unveiled the world's first 200 megapixel sensor for smartphones, that is the ISOCELL HP1. However, the company plans to go even higher. The South Korean company had revealed last year of wanting to develop a sensor for 600 megapixel camera, but we will have to wait a long time for his release.

Samsung is really thinking about bringing a 600MP smartphone photo sensor, 576MP to be exact. That's when it will arrive ...

Haechang LeeSenior VP of Samsung Electronics used an interesting slide during his presentation at the SEMI Europe Summit. There slide shows an overview of the pixel dimensions of the camera sensor and resolution trends since 2000. Indicates that the South Korean company plans to launch a camera sensor from 576 megapixels in 2025. However, that sensor may not end up in smartphones. Instead, it looks like Samsung's upcoming 576-megapixel camera sensor will be developed for cars.

samsung and the 600 megapixel photo sensor

Samsung's website had previously mentioned that the human eyes correspond to a resolution of about 500 megapixels and the company wants to go further. With its nearly 600-megapixel sensor, it could achieve that feat, but that might not necessarily mean it would be a good match for smartphones. Instead, such sensors could be used in autonomous vehicles, drones and medical equipment. Autonomous vehicles would also need ultra-powerful chips to process images and video that come out of a high-resolution sensor.

Indeed, such a resolution would indeed be ineffective on a smartphone since it would mean exorbitant measures, well beyond tablets and so-called Phablet.
