Social platform X, formerly known as Twitter, has officially launched a highly anticipated new feature: the audio and video calls. A move already announced which not only modernizes X, but also marks a significant milestone in the journey of Elon Musk, owner of the platform, of make X an all in one app a bit like WeChat in China.

Audio Video Calling Features on X (Twitter)

Audio and video calls on X were introduced with a notification (photo below) that many users received when opening the app. This functionality can be managed through a new option present in the app settings, which allows you to activate or deactivate calls and to select with whom you are willing to use it.

Options include the ability to allow calls only from people in your address book, people you follow, verified users, or all three categories. To start a call, simply open a direct conversation with another user, select the phone icon in the top right corner of the screen and choose between audio or video call.

Availability and requirements

Although there hasn't been an official announcement from X, the feature seems to be already operational. Elon Musk also revealed that the function will be available on iOS, Android, Mac and PC, without the need for a phone number. However, it is not yet clear whether the feature will be accessible to all users or only to those with a Premium membership. Recently, it was discovered that X's code suggested the need for a Premium subscription to X (Twitter) to access this feature.

Elon Musk has also hinted at the possibility of introducing a annual fee to access the platform, already starting to require a dollar a year from users of New Zealand and Philippines. This could be a clue to X's future business model, which could include other exclusive features for Premium subscribers.
